It's hard to tell from the very different art styles and one is kind of shitty 2D art. Glynda's face is wrinkle free but you can tell by her attitude and design that she's supposed to be a hot milf type. On the other hand, all of these girls are posed and dressed youthfully except for maybe the winter one but her haircut is unflattering and she's meant to have a cooler demeanor than the others.

I also remember this was one of those 'facts' around the time the concept was introduced that they completely threw out. 'Maiden' by definition is a young woman, more strictly unmarried and/or virginal; I thought ignoring Glynda to pick a high school student was supposed to be the obvious implication. Cinder's age is ambigious but she also passed herself off as a student. The later Volumes rolled around and Raven got the powers which sunk a hole in that theory. Raven has to be at least 40, maybe 39 if we're really pushing it, unless she had Yang as a teenager which is impossible given what we know about Team STRQ's history and this isn't that kind of show.

As early as V3 I was waiting to see if they were really hacks enough to make Winter the Winter Maiden at some point...and then they didn't for years just to finally pass it onto Penny of all people (win the fans back?) then Winter without even acknowledging the name and how dumb it is. Which is why I don't know if it's better or worse than what they actually did. That reminds me, they all but dropped the seasonal themeing to leave us with Maidens with boring generic elemental powers. I'm so stumped at how these ideas manage to erode like this at RT?

Beacon starts at 17 and lasts 4 years. Assuming she got pregnant after graduation that makes her 38/nearing 39 (Finished Beacon and got pregnant at 21, plius the 17 years of her daughter). I do think she’s older, though, as from her dialogue with Yang I got the impression it took her a while to learn everything she could about Salem, enough to realise that beating her is impossible. So, yeah, 40-41 works. Fuck, Raven should stop the bandit shit and just start a beauty cult. With her graceful aging, other women will probably assume she’s chosen by Gods.

I’m not going to rant about how much I hate what they did to Penny in Vol 8, and instead say that giving it to Penny was stupid. There wasn’t a scene that I recall where the extra powers changed anything, then they had to create an “awakened maiden” (that immediately stopped being a thing) just to stop Cinder from getting the powers, and they had to rewrite/loosen the rules/definitions for the powers so Penny could qualify.

That reminds me, has Cinder ever actually used any other power than fire? She’s like the only maiden who hasn’t figured that shit out. Penny could do that the instant she got her powers. As an aside, is it just me or did Penny’s powers grow and fall in strength during Vol 8? They seemed more inconsistent than Team RWBY’s strength in Vol 6.

I don’t think Ozpin is just a shitty Dumbledore, but he does suffer from the Dumbledore syndrome as I mentioned before.

His take on Ozpin’s backstory is (like you said) outdated, but I can’t blame him since this came out before Vol 6.

Very valid points on Qrow. His maiden point is actually made stronger by Vol 6’s reveal and the writers on Twitter. The Maidens (and his reincarnation abulity) are literally causing him to lose powers (meaning the Gods literally fucked him over on purpose). So Ozpin made a decision that was actively fucking him over for hundreds of years and he did fuck all to fix it. But, what about the relic doors? Don’t you need Maidens for those? Sure, but that’s by Ozpin’s design. Recall that the Relics came before Maidens. While it’s unclear if they came with that other dimension, it is clear that its protection can not be hard set to require Maidens in a way Ozpin could not bypass. Therefore, Ozpin is literally causing himself to bleed to death for no discernible reason. If Salem can move Maiden powers between hosts despite not making the powers, why can’t Ozpin? It’s clearly possible. Move the powers back into himself. He literally has a machine SPECIFICALLY MADE TO DO THIS. This also brings into question as to why Salem doesn’t undo the relics’ protections, but given that she spent a lot of her mortal life trapped in a tower, I could believe that Ozpin could know some special magic she didn’t, and that she’s smart enough to not make the Maiden mistake herself.

I sorta disagree on the bird thing. Sure Qrow and Raven don’t seem like good choices, but this probably happened after they both joined the inner circle. Qrow’s loyalty to Ozpin (prior to Vol 6) is without question, and Raven must have been good enough at acting to seem to have repented/be loyal. Personally, Qrow and Summer seemed like a better choice (makes Summer hard to hit and be able to nuke Grimm from above), but neither is unreasonable if we assume that risking Summer for scouting missions (reason for that power as I recall) would be too much risk (though Vol 9 kills that theory, so fuck me, I guess), and if we assume that Tai was just not as good at being stealthy/sneaky. I could certainly see Raven being the better pick in that regard.

The point about Grimm is somewhat valid. It lacks the info that Salem is literally unkillable, and that she can make tons of new Grimm super easily, but it is weird how these super soldiers can’t just massacre the total Grimm forcepool. I assume that the closer they get the more reinforcements can arrive faster so any party sent to the ’Land of Darkness’ would die, and I guess that would explain why Salem is hesitant to bum rush the kingdoms (if that is even her real goal)

Very good points of defense of the relics. The usage of the relics argument sorta is outdated given that we now know all relics have a fatal flaw that makes them less useful (Jinn is a journalist that can answer 3 questions every hundred years), relic of creation is useless unless you only need to make a project faster (or are okay with next usage destroying the previous project). Relic of choice just literally shows you some random choice you have to make some random point in the future. The usefulness is debatable at best. Honestly, I’m not convinced Relic of destruction is capable of destroying anything, would be par for the course.

The point about Jaune is valid, but given that Ozpin was right about Jaune, that somehow turns into a w for Ozpin. I guess even he gets a lucky break every now and then.

I disagree with the comment about Oscar v Lionheart. Qrow didn’t struggle in that fight, and Oscar was doing well because as Lionheart himself noted several episodes prior, he has gotten out of shape behind desk. If Lionheart doesn’t do missions and became more or less a desk commander, it sorta makes sense.

Overall for a dated video, pretty good. Going to watch the other one later at some point.

I watched bits of it. He consistently remarks on how surprised he is people didn't get something, blames his artists for not conveying ideas, and spends much of the first couple of episodes sucking off how much better they handled Adam.

All he did was make the most consistently good volume shit, that's my take.

I fudged the math because somehow I completely forgot how old the main cast (besides Ruby) was supposed to be. It's funny how they threw one atom of effort into making Raven look 'older' and that's where they added almost unnoticeable undereye shadows to her Maya model, under the inner corners of her eyes... even though they also reshaped her entire head for the engine swap.

Nope. I think they forgot or didn't care. It always looked visually redundant because she already had fire powers, giving her maiden ones added nothing except give her an infinite mana pool (since it's magic and not Aura). I miss her old fighting style with the weird screaming portals and obsidian-looking glass, now she's just a shitty Azula.

The way these 2D avatars move always creep me out, they already had 3D models, was rigging it to be .vrm that beyond them? If only she used this more natural voice for Ruby, it's still a character-voice but isn't nearly as shrill.

Well, if we go by current ages, Yang is now 19 (as per wiki), so Raven would be, at the very least, 40 now. Though, again, I like to add a few more years on working to find out the truth of the world, so I’d say 41-42, could work.

That wasn’t fire powers (in the sense that it was limited to fire or only Cinder), that was just an “ancient” technique called dust weaving. You weave dust into your clothing and you can wield it differently. Then they made Maidens and forgot about this ability.
