I read The Ark awhile back because of this thread, and had mostly memory holed it, but the recent review brought back some memories.

I had come to the conclusion that Benson is Fat's self-insert character, which is very disturbing because

Something that’s been bugging me is his inconsistent use of titles for the lead character. He’s Captain because he was the captain of his football team (IN SPACE), but is a detective by profession and a constable too? He even throws out a useless bit about the local police force not using the upper ranks for some SPACE reason.

This happens in all of his books that I’ve read so far, he starts world building and then fumbles the idea.

Oh and Pat seems to have latched on to the idea that he’s writing hard sci-fi so everything needs to be plausible. His ship design comes right out of the Project Rho website but somehow much worse because he still doesn’t understand why things work the way they do.

I’m looking forward to more reviews of the Ark.

It's based on various real navy traditions that a ship has only one god/captain. In both the Royal Navy and the USN for example if there's a second person with the actual rank of captain on board ship, they get a courtesy bump in rank to Commodore (or equivalent in the case of the cargo of Marines) to prevent even the slightest possibility of confusion.

Well yes, the most famous Publicist in the UK, Max Clifford was both notorious for representing and making palatable reprehensible people while being an utter disgusting fuck himself.

My point was not about PR firm’s worries about their reputation, but about someone giving Fatrick the money to hire one, then the donor being exposed.

Sure they can claim Fatrick pulled the wool over their eyes, but anyone with PR money should be the kind of person wary enough to do their own background check.

The SFWA were one thing as they exist to protect pedophile members, but Fatrick already wasted enough of their money.

Hence I don’t see him having anyone else willing to front him serious cash unless they are so rich a million dollars or so is pocket change to them, or they really don’t care about their reputation, or they are a family member who would do anything for their relatives.

Maybe someone could if they had some sort of agenda which Fatrick could further, but surely there are more credible and dependable patsies than Fatrick.
