Yeah, I've never been involved with a crisis line which has that little training. Training is usually ongoing and there are also normally more experienced staff to whom difficult calls can be routed. This is standard even for services which depend on volunteers.

Many crisis lines have a high rate of unanswered calls, especially when they're starting out and can't schedule adequate numbers at all times. I think this has been badly planned and should probably have been gotten up and running on a city by city basis first, because if you don't sort out issues before you try to scale they only get worse.

Peer support is all well and good but we already know that Trans Lifeline uses volunteers with unresolved mental health issues and that's a recipe for disaster. Peer support should always be facilitated by a qualified professional.
