Disaster Maui’s mayor says 6 confirmed deaths in raging wildfires, hundreds of homes feared destroyed - actually 99+ deaths now, also check Happenings for more discussion & details

LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Six people have been confirmed killed in the raging wildfires that have decimated entire Maui communities, but authorities feared that number could rise as flames are slowly beaten down and emergency responders are able to move in.

The fires are still active and out of control, which means a full picture of the devastation hasn’t yet come into view. But officials say at least 20 people sustained serious injuries, thousands of people are displaced, and the county’s emergency response is near a breaking point.

Richard Olsten, a helicopter pilot who flew over Lahaina town on Wednesday morning, said much of the historic town appears gone. “It’s like an area was bombed. It’s like a war zone,” he said.

Here’s the latest:

  • Maui County says three active wildfires continue to burn with more than 100 firefighters trying to battle the flames. Firefighters weren’t able to use helicopters to douse the flames Tuesday because of the high winds, but helicopters have gone up Wednesday.
  • More than 2,100 people were housed overnight at the county’s four emergency shelters: Maui Preparatory Academy in Napili, Maui High School in Kahului, War Memorial Center and Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.
  • Authorities confirmed at least 20 people suffered serious burns in the wildfires and several were airlifted to Oahu. Three are in critical condition at the Straub Medical Center burn unit.
  • The state plans to fly 4,000 tourists out of Maui on Wednesday to Oahu, multiple sources confirm to Hawaii News Now. They will be put up at the Hawaii Convention Center. Authorities said at least 2,000 people were waiting at Kahului’s airport.
  • Gov. Josh Green, who is off island on personal travel but returning, said fatalities are feared but not confirmed. “The scope of the fire is enormous,” he said. “We are going to be digging out of this fire.”
  • Many flights into Maui from the mainland have been canceled. Travelers are being urged to check with their carrier before going to the airport.
  • At least 14 people had to be rescued from waters off Lahaina on Tuesday night after jumping into the water to escape the raging wildfire, authorities confirmed. Among them: Two young children who were reunited with family.

Gov. Josh Green discusses the latest on the raging wildfires on Maui.
Eyewitnesses described an apocalyptic scene Tuesday in Lahaina town, where residents were forced to jump into the harbor waters to avoid fast-moving flames from a massive brush fire that’s destroyed much of the historic area — and continues to burn.

Residents say an overwhelmed fire force — fighting flames all day amid powerful winds — could do little as flames ripped through the historic community, destroying dozens of homes and businesses in what onlookers believe is the worst natural disaster in Hawaii’s history since Hurricane Iniki.

Acting Gov. Sylvia Luke confirmed that the Hawaii National Guard had been activated to help respond to the sprawling fire crisis, which also includes other raging wildfires. The flames have forced thousands to their homes, and many aren’t sure what they’ll find when they return.

Due to the severe situation, Luke has extended the emergency proclamation to all counties. Non-essential air travel is being discouraged to Maui and all state agencies are being ordered to assist with the evacuation.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services Director Jim Ireland confirmed that patients on Maui are being airlifted to Oahu.

He said a critical burn victim was transferred from an ambulance at Honolulu airport overnight to Straub Medical Center, which is the only burn center in the state.

As of Wednesday morning, Ireland said at least eight patients have been transferred to Oahu — three of whom were transported in critical condition. He noted that not all patients are burn victims.

“It’s been very heartbreaking for all of us and frustrating because if we weren’t an island we would drive over and help them from Honolulu, but being that we are separated we’re trying to support them in anyway we can,” Ireland said.

“We have put Straub on Oahu in divert status so they focus on those incoming patients from Maui and aren’t getting more patients on Oahu. So, Kuakini and Queens in town have had to step up and accept the disproportionate share of Oahu patients.”

Officials confirmed to Hawaii News Now that the Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and boat to Front Street Beach and the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor to rescue a number of people from the water.

About 10:50 p.m., the Coast Guard said it had rescued a dozen people from waters off Lahaina.

The full scope of the devastation in Lahaina isn’t known, but videos on social media show a terrifying wall of flames descending on Front Street in Lahaina and destroying everything in its path. One heart-stopping video posted by fleeing residents shows uncontrolled flames in all directions.

The video also shows burned out cars, but there was no immediate word on injuries.

Lahaina resident Tiare Lawrence compared the scene to something out of the apocalypse, with people running for their lives.

“It’s just so hard. I’m currently Upcountry and just knowing I can’t get a hold of any of my family members. I still don’t know where my little brother is. I don’t know where my stepdad is,” she said.

“Everyone I know in Lahaina, their homes have burned down.”

Front Street business owner Alan Dickar says he watched business after business in the historic district going up in flames.

“Buildings on both sides were engulfed. There were no fire trucks at that point; I think the fire department was overwhelmed,” Dickar said. “That is the most important business street on Maui.”

A Maui County spokesperson confirmed there were “multiple” structure fires in addition to “extensive evacuations” in the Lahaina area, but authorities said they were unlikely to ascertain the full extent until well into Wednesday — when winds are expected to die down.

The county also said it wasn’t immediately clear just how many people jumped into the water off Lahaina to avoid smoke and flames, though they indicated rescue operations were ongoing.

“The Coast Guard has been responding to impacted areas where residents are entering the ocean due to smoke and fire conditions,” the county said, in a news release about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

“Individuals were transported by the Coast Guard to safe areas.”

The brush fire in Lahaina is one of at least seven sizable wildfires that firefighters are battling statewide amid treacherous conditions — powerful winds, low humidity and dry brush.

CONTINUING COVERAGE:

The winds — fueled by Hurricane Dora as it passes south of the state — have topped 55 mph in many spots, with gusts to 70 to 80 mph. In addition to wildfires, first responders are grappling with downed trees and damaged structures. Also on Maui, thousands remain without power.

And while the Lahaina fire appears by fire to have wrought the most devastation, widespread damage is also being reported in Kihei and Kula, where evacuation orders also remain in place.

Another concern for first responders is the thick smoke blanketing parts of Maui.

Earlier in the day, officials confirmed that a firefighter in West Maui suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) regional administrator authorized the use of federal funds on Wednesday to assist the state in combatting the Lahaina fire.

Meanwhile, some groups are working to gather donations to help those impacted by the wildfires. Click here for details.

With all the failures and local government making this worse even now.. here come the "global warming" articles.
Oh and shitheads crying that "urban areas must become more dense"

OC given the politics of the governments involved, it was only a matter of time. They will never be allowed to take any blame for the failures.

A read about the "climate" aspect (or lack there of) of this:

EDIT:

Was looking into this and it seems several factors all came together to create the perfect storm.

First a lot of farming is no longer done there leaving big empty fields. This from an article:

The landscape of West Maui, where Lahaina is located, was dominated as recently as the 1980s by sugar and pineapple farms. “Sugar and pineapple are now gone from the West Maui region,” a government agricultural study concluded in 2015, “and new agriculture has been slow to re-emerge. Much of the former cropland has reverted to dry grass and shrubs that flush green after the rain and periodically burn off in wildfires as they dry in the hot Lahaina sun.”

On top of that they were dealing with mildish drought and a lot of native and non-native plants encroaching. The final straw was a hurricane that came through just the right way to blast them with warm dry heavy sustained winds at the time of the fires.

Add in an unprepared and incompetent emergency services (who may have left the actual fire after it was "mostly" contained/out) and local government, who didn't even have fire plans.. and you get this!

Why are they saying it's the deadliest wildfire ever? There's at least 1 forest fire on the mainland that has a high score of over 1000. Do they really think the death numbers are going to go that high?
There's still over 1,000 people unaccounted for. Survivors reported seeing lots of bodies floating in the water and those burned out cars you see in the news have charred skeletons at the bottom of them.

A recent news report showing some of the devastation on the island:

Some highlights:
1. The old big tree is still possibly alive.
2. Boats that were fifty yards out on the harbor of Lahaina were burnt.
3. Only 3% of the five square miles in a burnt area had been searched when this video was recorded. The death toll is officially up to 93 at this time.
4. Burnt animals are being seen in the roads.
5. Body parts are falling apart when found.
I burst into tears when they showed the search & rescue dog. That Very Good Boy™️ has no way of understanding this horrific situation but he looks so proud to be doing his job. A single dog is doing more to help than the entire government.

Lahaina looks like the ruins of Pompeii.

The only other being in this I feel bad for is Mick Fleetwood. He didn't deserve to lose his restaurant after putting up with Stevie Nicks for half a century.

The whole emergency response is becoming a clusterfuck of epic proportions, and the media and authorities are focused more on silencing dissenting voices and jerking each other off in press conferences than in getting needed supplies into the area. Local charity groups are being turned away from approaching West Maui via road and are resorting using people's boats to deliver water and food. They're slow-rolling the body count numbers for the public. They're begging Air B&B owners and the public to open their homes while hotels are still packed with tourists and refusing to refund cancellations.

At least now people on other islands like myself are starting to wake up a bit and realize we're being Hurricane Katrina-ed and our leaders are "Heckofajob Brownie"-ing each other.

Can something be tiresome and rage-inducing at the same time? Because that's how I feel.
I don't think Hawaii has a choice in governance, is there? There's no alternative to the DNC and local cronies.

52 Years of Almost uninterrupted Democrat Rule (There was a 2 term Republican governor from 2002 to 2010, who was elected because apparently the HDNC got caught being Lolcows during the election and the Campaign Self Destructed)

Nope, no choice. It's a blue supermajority state, and the handful of Republicans were considered RINOs long before Trump appeared on the scene. One small consolation is that the Woke antifa have no toe-hold in the state. It's about as socially conservative as a blue state can be in the age of clown world.

“YOU’LL BURN AND WE’LL BE HAPPY”

Cartoon published 08/15/2023

Joe Biden may not have a comment about the devastating fire in Lahaina, Maui….but I do.

Tina and I visited Maui many years ago and to me the island really was paradise. Lahaina was a quaint town on the Northwest coast of the island and it was charming. It disturbed me to see how it was suddenly annihilated by a fire fanned by a hurricane that was 700 miles away. I extend my condolences to all the families who lost loved ones.

Nearly 100 have died due to the conflagration, and that death toll keeps rising. The fire reminded me of the one that took place a few years ago in another paradise of sorts—Paradise, California.

That fire was very unusual. It melted engine blocks in some cases while sparing trees nearby. Was that a directed energy experiment? Were some sort of directed energy beams, lasers or microwaves used? Yes, I know I come across as a ‘conspiracy theorist,’ but I have good reason to be suspicious. After seeing Building 7 fall during 9-11 and after the planned-demic foisted upon the world by Gates, Fauci, and Big Pharma, I have every right to my suspicions.

Everyone knows how government forces have long been conducting weather experiments. It’s what power-mad control freaks do. The people aren’t supposed to know about it, but we do. Could the sudden and very intense fire at Lahaina be due to an act by sinister globalist forces? Did they try to wipe out the residents intentionally? I can’t say for sure, but the citizens there said “It was like a bomb had been dropped.”

It certainly looked as if some sort of directed energy beam had been used. Even boats in water burned. What happened to the warning system? There were no sirens, and certainly no government warnings. The Hawaiian governor took the easy way out and blamed ‘climate change.’

Really? A week or two earlier they told us the lie that oceans near the equator were boiling. Are they now telling us that the climate is so hot that it caused spontaneous combustion on the island?

More likely the fire was sent intentionally, or perhaps a power line was blown down by the wind, thus sparking a fire in the very dry and non-native grass. Still, why were some buildings spared while others burned to a crisp? Again, it resembled the California fire. Are the globalists trying to burn out the middle class and their businesses there as well as the poor? That’s what they did during the lockdowns. Small businesses were shut down. It’s all part of the UN’s Agenda 21 and 30 plans. WEF Chairman Klaus Schwab said we would own nothing and be happy. He wants us to eat bugs, not meat. In actuality he wants us dead. Deadly vaccines or burning out whole towns are ways to start.

The future might hold some answers about what really happened in Lahaina. Many of the residents probably don’t have enough insurance to rebuild—and rebuilding will be far more expensive due to complex building codes and regulations that have been added over the years. If we see the ultra rich swoop in and buy up the land, our suspicions will have been confirmed. Space is very limited on Maui and the globalist billionaires like Oprah and Bezos would love to get their grapple hooks on it.

We all have the right and perhaps a duty to question ‘official’ narratives and vent our suspicions, but the legacy media will no doubt soon ignore the fire altogether rather than investigate its causes. Instead we will hear the fire cited by the usual ‘expert’ loudmouths as evidence of ‘climate change.’ It’s bunk.

Most of us know they buy out scientists who then cherry pick the data to make their case, which is pushed by the corporate media (also bought-out). Their climate change narrative is not going away any time soon. They will happily burn down entire towns to ‘prove’ it.

Hawaii is beautiful, it should be a nature preserve, the developed parts of it are blights on the landscape and the people that live there are awful.

I haven't been following this so I am just absolutely LMAO at Lahaina burning down, fucking good riddance, fuck that place. The working poors who live there should take the opportunity to move somewhere normal, as for the rest... the rich faggots in their beachside manors, the junkies, and the various shades of indian, fuck them.

I'm seriously LOL right now and I'm very curious to know if a certain individual's fancy mansion burned down, maybe they drowned too, I sure hope so. Lahaina's like the only actual town on Maui. Now the tourists will have to stay in the hotels by the airport.

Something is horribly horribly wrong here. Part of me wants to post this shit to the happenings area. but I almost don't know where the fuck to begin.

First off. The police chief in charge of all this? The exact same one in charge of the 2017 las vagas shooting and he brought the same deputy chief to work with him too

He's got a record of being accused of improper conduct. The police investigated themselves and found no wrongdoing. https://www.civilbeat.org/2022/09/m...mplaints-against-new-chief-not-substantiated/

This is the third fucking time an area outside of a home oprah owned burned down and her place didn't receive a scratch. Bunch of homeless people got burned out side her texas home recently and there were wild fires near (but not touched as far as I know) her place in 2017.

Here's more info on all the acre's she's bought https://twitter.com/matttttt187/status/1691459111865757696 She's put a lot of money into Maui

The governor has made no secret of his desire to buy out the owners in the past.

This recently 404'd post hit me pretty hard.

They are using the space laser shit as a psy op to distract from the actual fucking misconduct. actively taking down footage and links to what was really going down. They closed off the roads and created roadbocks that killed hundreds of people as their cars caught fire and exploaded.

Acording to this post Some reports from fox are saying firefighters TURNED OFF THE WATER THE DAY BEFORE. AND THEY GOT ALL CLEAR SIGNELS 8 AM BEFORE THE FIRE HIT THEM!

Also, There's a fucking kindle book on how the fires were caused by climate change and we are only a week into this tragedy.
https://twitter.com/sisterlyvibe/status/1691570472687685696

My take? There's no question this wasn't intentional arson of some degree. The problem is this probably killed a lot more people then they were expecting.

They are trying to bury this hardcore. This wasn't a tragedy. This was murder. Kewi's we need to dig into the money.

They are using the space laser shit as a psy op to distract from the actual fucking misconduct.

It doesn't really matter how they did it. Space Lasers or hired arsonists. But it's clear it was organized.

I'm seeing TikToks of people of Maui saying the Water was turned off, the Fire dept abandoned the fire even though there were 70mph winds predicted. No use of the hurricane warning sirens.

The death toll is 99 now and officials are saying to expect at the VERY LEAST a doubling of that in just the next week. (only ~30% of the area has been searched at all)

Still for me, the thing that stands out the most is that they live on the dry side of the island, surrounded by dry dead plants this time of year, with a history of fires just like this, but still had NO FIRE EMERGENCY PLANS! (they were even warned more than once, including after a close call years ago) These are places where the politicians likely hand-wring and spend spend spend on climate change bullshit. The kind of silly fucks who will spend the next years slowing and fucking with the rebuilding in the name of making sure the community is sustainable. And maybe more fire safe.

Don't forget, when tards try to push the "climate change fires" bullshit.

EDIT:

Looks like they are planning to sue the power company because... checks notes..... they didn't shut off all the power (and take the cell towers with it) all day since it was windy. facepalm

A reminder that we don't even know how the fire started yet and it didn't start near developed areas from the sound of it. But that isn't stopping retards from posting images of burnt up power poles and lines, in the middle of the fucking city it swept across from outside, like some kind evidence of power company complicity.

So I full expect the blame to be placed on the most retarded and irrelevant targets (power company and "climate change") so the people are distracted from the real issues.

ReeeeEra is not sure what to think. There are a few tards but no real narrative is up yet. (right, wrong or... insane)

The only thing we all agree on is that the small guys are going to get absolutely fucked over in all of this. ("act of god" > real-estate buyouts and green new mandates to make rebuilding all the more difficult and costly for whomever is lucky enough to be able to pay to rebuild)
