After 1992, it has been a strategy to remove potential usurpers from the ballot. The example I like to cite is Ralph Nader in 2004, they just needed him off a few states to neutralize any potential threat. The same can be easily applied to Trump. It just takes a few and you can see states like Utah eagerly lining up to kick him off.

It's always tempting to blame people who vote for the policies that destroy them because it is their faults, but in Hawaiis case it is a bit different imo because there are a lot of people who just got stuck there because they were disillusioned and naive and the Hawaiian Democrat machine is so entrenched it might as well be a little Chicago in the Pacific.
