as I understand it, Japan has kind of a mascot industry thing going on. one path to success is creating an original charming character that can be used to sell shit (Hello Kitty being the standout example, or more recently, Vocaloid) and this is kind of an ambient culture when it comes to making entertainment projects in Glorious Nippon. the "Touhou project" was originally one sperglord making indie shmups back in the late 90s and early 2000s. the anime girls are extra flavor, but also serve as different "ships" to play as in the bullet hell tradition, with latter games adding new characters and celebrating older ones. however, because the American interface with Japanese culture is heavily coomer-driven, the stench of rule 34 follows it closely, as with any popular Japanese media franchise. this seems counter to the original developer's intent as the typical 2hu character wears an ornate dress that covers almost her entire body, does not have exaggerated tits or ass etc, is clearly meant to be charming without any sexual aspect to the design. while Japanese culture has always had an undercurrent of degeneracy, I think Japan's relationship with America has caused an unfortunate feedback loop in which American coomers' thirst for Japanese degeneracy has emboldened those industries and drawn more innocent people to the dark side. misskey seems the perfect crystallization of this - it's hosted in Japan, has Japanese users, ostensibly caters to Japanese law, but also has an obviously large cohort of non-Japanese users, including the owners themselves.
