Pure neuroticism.
Something doesn't sound right...
On point one:
- There is less mental exhaustion driving in rural areas as opposed to urban or suburban areas.
- You can always stop and take a break.
On point two:
- She takes road trips between 11, 16, and 24 hours.
- She doesn't drive or only drives for part of the trip.
- Her portion of driving is probably only for 4.5 hours.
If one has a gluten free breakfast (for the fucked husband) at home, then they can probably go 5.5 to 6 hours before eating again. As such, for an 11 hour road trip they would only need to eat ONCE because they would still eat at the destination with the rail alternative. Hence, for a 16 hour road trip its twice and for 24 hours it's three times as one party is probably asleep.
Regarding a rail alternative, they won't be practical for most of her trips. Assuming an average speed of 50 mph, a restroom break every two hours for 15 minutes, and meal break for an hour:
- An 11 hour trip will be about 430 miles.
- A 16 hour trip will be about 600 miles.
- A 24 hour trip will be about 800 miles.
The optimal distance for rail travel is between 100 to 500 miles, beyond that flying is probably easier and faster. So rail will only be practical on the 11 hour / 430 mile trip.
Even on rail, the food doesn't offer a great deal of variety as opposed to car travel. I have taken the Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief, Empire Builder, and Sunset Limited. On these long distance trains the dining while decent only has about 16 options between an breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
With these considerations, I am skeptical one to two meals on the road is the deal breaker.
^These calculations are assuming a one way journey. With a two way road trip, her objections become more ridiculous.
Next, we need to address the issue of time. As previously stated, all her trips exceed the optimal distance for rail travel. So her salvation won't be found on rail if that's the concern
Finally, is the issue of her not wanting to visit poduck shit holes. Okay, that's fine but why is she calling herself a communist then?
Amtrak is
relied upon by many in smaller rural communities. So she doesn't like to be in podunk towns but is fine with possibly riding in a train with them?
Finally, she expresses concerns about her husband but chooses to drink instead of sharing the driving.
Based on all these factors, I suspect her issues are not with car travel,
per se but is reflective of something greater.
Be it a hatered of the working class (while being a communist), being unfulfilled in her relationships, or a chemical dependency issue her issues do not begin with muh cars.
