Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

What's the deal with Berserk? I saw how much people dick ride it, and I read up to the part where the skull knight shows up for the first time. I don't really like what I'm seeing so far, not content wise, just story wise. Is it overrated, or am I just not in on the hype?
Basically it's edgelord porn. Brutality and gore and violence for the sake of brutality and gore and violence. I rank it at the same level as Redo of a Healer.

asically it's edgelord porn. Brutality and gore and violence for the sake of brutality and gore and violence. I rank it at the same level as Redo of a Healer.
I once argued to a few friends online that Steel Ball Run had better characters than berserk. A guy refused to talk to me for a week.

Tell me you never read Berserk without telling me you never read Berserk (or watched the anime for that matter).

What's the deal with Berserk?
If I remember correctly, you are pretty early on, still basically the Golden Age arc, or the tale end of the same. The story picks up after that point as Guts begins his journey to help Casca, and face off with the Godhand.

Wouldn't really agree... to a point. It DOES start off as a similar vein of revenge porn (albeit a far better executed vein than Redo) but Berserk's edginess ends up fluctuating massively through the first few arcs before softening up (seemingly) permanently post-Eclipse. I'd say the real issue with Berserk is its atrocious pacing...

I had to give up Berserk when it started to get too comedic. Like it always had a funny moment here in there, but when it got to the point that Puck invaded every other panel to be a goofball and then the introduction of Isidro, who seemed to just be more comedic relief, I had to stop. Berserk was totally edgelord material at points, but a part of me liked the gritty, serious nature of it when the edgelord factor got pulled back a bit. When it started to become a half-comedy, I just couldn't bring myself to care anymore.

>Someone tells me Boruto did a time skip
>check out the designs
>Sarada went from a child prostitute to a regular prostitute
>the expressions are always blank
>art is stiff
>obvious KPOP inspired designs

The way the guy draws girls honestly gives me alarms. More than the made in abyss guy drawing children breaking a bone.

Unironically peak of Japanese media. It also has a great community too. Some great examples below:

Earlier I was having a brief discussion with a friend about some controversies involving anime studios (he believes there's been studios that were just money laundering/tax write-offs run by the yakuza), and I came across this interesting blog post involving the political tension behind the movie Future War 198X and the waves it made in the nation.

The politics of 80s anime: the 198X controversy

Whether you agree with the animators' movements/stances or not, there's definitely a different feel to anime and the industry from this time-period that is no longer felt today. Maybe it's just hindsight being 20/20 in looking back on the effects of the Cold War, but it's rather alien, yet fascinating.

>leftist animators pissy that Soviets portrayed as dangerous retards compared to Americans
Every fucking time.

Japanese politics are always weird to me because they unironically have that weird “everything is actually sort of right wing” that leftists whine about. They’re a heavily conservative culture and the right wing has pretty accurate existential fears of losing their culture, becoming a true vassal state, and falling behind. The left wing kinda have a point considering how insane the late Imperial Government became during WWII and not all of them are Globohomo communist retards.

Yeah, I never read Boruto because the art just felt like a downgrade. The story from what I understood was basically “times are changing and the nature of how conflicts work are leaving behind ninja wizards”, but it’s done terribly.
I reread Naruto a bit ago and it holds up until the war arc, but even that has it’s moments.

The right wing have no problem being an American vassal state. It’s becoming a Chinese vassal (or straight up going Communist) that irks them.
I think it’s more tolerable because MacArthur didn’t drag his balls all over their face. Some Americans are more receptive of letting Japan actually have a military.

It’s basically putting up with that Chicago nigger in hopes they get to be an actual country again.

New Jojolands chapter is shit
Jojolands in general is shit
it's so fucking over Araki just needs to retire
I gave up on Jojolion. I feel like the Antagonists really fail to have any personality, like they are a bit wacky but there’s nothing really memorable about them. In terms of both the main and minor villains.

Like every other fucking part has a clear fucking goal or antagonist. DIO was just a megalomaniacal douchebag, Kars was a genocidal narcissist, Kira was a serial killer blessed with insane luck, Diavolio was a paranoid psychopath, Pucci had a guilt/ savior complex, and Valentine was barely a villain beyond having a goal that probably was impossible and willing to kill mountains of non-Americans.
Toru just felt like a more boring Divalio without the psychosis that made him fun. Wonder of U was just a targeted D4C.

Jojolion tried to save itself with the mini-story about SBRverse Joseph and old lady Lucy but the ending was still shit.
JoJolands started off as shit and will be shit for the foreseeable future.
