This could be the masterplan. Stall until the next chapter of her life opens up as a speaker or journalist. It probably seemed like a sensible next step, she had connections and then she could review games for her friends and write about problematic something or anothers in the geekosphere.
If she wrote r60 in something easier and cross platform like unity, hired a few interns and got it out the door well before 5 guys and didn't make up her stupid backstory things could have been different. She'd have a game out at a fraction of the price and she still might be getting speaking engagements.
One decision changes everything.

It's always been weird to me that people like Wu claim stuff like this is "dedicating their lives". Like it's not something someone just does on their off-time before going off to live their life. Compared to, say, tweeting all day in a dirty house.

I think there's one problem with John's potential master plan to become a journo. If he's got the connections, he'll get a job, so that isn't much of a big deal. The problem is when he publishes work, who is going to read it? The Gators hate him. The antiGators hate him. He's got around 50k followers, which is a drop of piss in the grand scheme of things. I guess he'd have to go to somewhere that has top notch brand recognition, as he's not growing anyone's business with his rep.

How'd this come up again? Nobody ever pretended to be Wu, Universities are free to give out graduation information (within reason) to anyone that asks, provided the student hasn't explicitly instructed them not to. They defiitely asked Wu if it's ok and someone didn't opt-out. Oops!
I just fucking emailed them like last year(?) and they answered me without making any fuss.
@Norvic even spent a few real life bucks to ask 'Student Clearing House' to look into the degree claim.
AND EVEN IF someone had pretended to be Wu, the fact would still remain that there is no degree of Brianna's hanging above the mantle piece. And Frank's degrees are probably stored away in a box somewhere because he doesn't need to advertive his doctorate every opportunity he gets and the only person bragging about his having a PhD is Brianna Wu. Or maybe it's in his office so that Brianna can't touch it and pretend it's hers.

It's not just in the context of GG that Wu is nigh unemployable, though the history of sperg outs related to it are enough of a reason not to ever have someone like that have a byline on your site as an employed journalist.
Wu's provably unable to do any work and see it through to completion. When you have deadlines coming up on a regular basis (much like the Rev60 release, but for multiple different articles each month) you want to hire people that have drive and get their shit done. No way in hell will any big(-ish) publication that takes itself somewhat seriously want Wu on payroll. And the press is, according to Hunter S. Thompson, “[...] a gang of cruel faggots. Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits—a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo-cage.”. While there's certainly truth to that, even journalists wouldn't want to call someone like Wu a colleague.
And the 50k folowers? Hardly any of them seem to pay attention to Wu anymore. Most of them probably followed @Spacekatgal when GG was prolific because Wu was adamant to be part of the whole shebang. A lot of the accounts were likely throwaways that got used to only follow GG related people so as to not contaminate their personal twitter accounts and none of them bothered to unfollow or delete the account entirely after having lost interest.
Not even starting out at some podunk paper/small online rag and trying to waddle up the ladder to being recognizable will help at all, because as it stands, one google search and someone like Wu runs into a roadblock at ~⅓ the way up the ladder, what with all the drama and lies and fraud.
