The protected classes aspect of the civil rights act literally gives special causes of action, and therefore rights to people based on what race they are and their perceived historical oppression. A particularly principled progressive might say this is just a continuation of previous legal distinctions made by race in the past in reverse but it is still law nonetheless. This goes beyond just affirmative action, I wish people would learn more about what the civil rights act actually has been made to do (mostly by the warren court) because it enshrines a racial legal hierarchy in law that directly advantages some groups through the doctrine of protected classes. So don't be surprised that race remains a point of politics and identification in our society when its part of our law. This is why certain groups, especially black political advocacy orgs, hate the idea of colorblindness in law in a way that seems counterintuitive to anyone principled. Just look how they reacted to the abolishment of affirmative action

I think maybe the reason you find any identification based on race as being strange or obsessive is because you yourself are a mongrel (in a technical sense, not pejorative) and therefore benefit from a cultural and societal norm where race is not an identifying in group characteristic. Unfortunately for your perspective, a vast majority of this country, white or otherwise are still phenotypically distinct and therefore its natural for them to self select and identify racially. I don't expect you to understand the in group power of a consistent phenotype, because it is not your lived experience but when you live in a country where the government has always referred to it in law, and there is an open and direct agenda to reduce the size of some phenotypes to the benefits of others for political reasons of power it is your perspective that is the strange outlier not the other way around.
