I found a very good document on differing vaginas, vulvas, labias, and clitorises and it even breaks down the percentage found in women. I think it’s very interesting from a scientific standpoint but also insulting and frustrating to see people equate natural diversity to the mutilation they have going on.

You don't know how many people I've seen die from pontine strokes. They can be fine one minute with mild neurodeficiencies, the next they can't swallow or breathe, and they're in the ICU for 17 days and just pass away.

Honestly, I think the ones who die that quickly are probably the lucky ones. You don't hear of very many "good" outcomes in patients who survive the acute phase of a pontine stroke.

The article says that Sophie isn't the only victim and estimates that at least 15,000 kids have been similarly traumatized by doctors following Money's "research".

This article was an incredible piece of journalism, something that is increasingly rare these days. I thought the author did an excellent job conveying both the horror of what was done to Sophie and the resilience she has showed. I also think it made it very clear that Sophie's parents are also victims, albeit in a less physically obvious way. The bit about her now elderly dad crying during the interview will stick with me.

Sophie sounds like a lovely person who has found a way to be comfortable in her own skin and content with her life in spite of the horrifying circumstances of her childhood. Thank you so much for sharing her story here.

It's a completely different subject, but this story reminds me very much of an excellent 2009 article from the Washington Post about parents who have accidentally left a child in a hot car with fatal consequences. It is a truly wrenching thing to read, but I recommend it to anyone who was moved by the article about Sophie. Have Kleenex nearby and be prepared to just sit there staring silently into space for a few minutes after reading. The article is titled "Fatal Distraction" and once you've read it I do not think you can ever forget it.

I'd day the "inversion" school of thought people are their own special sect of skitzos, but tbh the whole tranavestigation thing is cringe in all its diet forms. Actually pharmacies sell needles, ideally to diabetics, but it really depends on the area. Some places will sell them at the pharmacist's discretion, some won't sell them at all, and some will sell them to whomever asks. Some even give out Narcan. There are also needle exchanges that give needles to addicts no questions asked, but not every state has them. My guess is that they wouldn't sell them to her because she was an obvious junkie (personally I think that's a terrible policy, but some people really think that a junkie won't do drugs if they don't have needles). This is assuming she's American; I have no idea what it's like everywhere else.

Yeah, if you support drug addicts there's always the possibility that at some point they'll dry out and become a functioning member of society, and some of them are escaping trauma... but having met and even lived with a few exjunkies, they're still not good for all that much. As a former addict, I ended up resorting to using dirty needles after new ones became difficult to get at one point. I eventually got an infection and ended up in a coma, then spent three months in the hospital after waking up (you could probably get several phallo surgeries for the amount insurance paid). I don't think selling needles at the pharmacy is the solution, but maybe needle exchanges are a more palatable idea. In my experience, you were expected to bring back all your (safely contained) used needles to get new ones. They also gave out other useful things like antibacterial wipes. Apparently they lead to users being more likely to eventually go to rehab, and cleaner junkies can't be a bad thing. Without the benefit of personal experience, though, I'd probably feel the same way you do. I don't think I would have quit any earlier if I had clean needles, but I probably could've avoided some expensive medical treatment, personal trauma, and hurting my family.

I understand your logic, but junkies don't die from infection. They just end up with an abscess or endocarditis and take up a hospital bed for 6 weeks getting IV vancomycin, because you can't discharge a junkie with a central line in place and oral linezolid is even more expensive than six weeks of hospital care.

Or however long until they AMA, because they're ambulatory and bored and only need to be there for dressing changes and antibiotics. Once the doctor discontinues IV opiates, and once their sketchy friends are required to leave their giant black backpacks with Security and stop visiting at night, they start thinking about leaving.

Long story short is that clean needles help keep a bed free for Grandma and her hip fracture.

I think they're a great idea. It ends up costing society less when they avoid getting infected with HIV from dirty needles, even if they were to never get clean. Like another commenter said, some needle exchanges will only give you new needles if you give all the dirty ones back.
You can get free sharps containers at any pharmacy in my province and bring that back to the needle exchange or get the containers there. It's not a solution to addiction itself but it's harm reduction.
You can get free narcan and training at most pharmacies here too, which is better for the public healthcare system than someone being permanently damaged by an OD like with comas, heart damage, brain damage etc.

That was rough. I'm pretty desensitized but I don't think any parent could read that without feeling the gut punch.
It's unforgivable negligence in a way, but its also a very human mistake, one that a parent that makes that mistake will have to live with every waking minute. I dare say they will punish themselves far more in those quiet times when they are alone that any court could. Charging them and dragging them through a trial seems a little much, its more like revenge than justice. Don't get me wrong, revenge has its place, and its circumstances where it is justice, just look at Gary Plauché's case, not this case.
That story was fucked up and my day is slightly worse for having read it, but I'm glad I did.

Say, if someone drunk-drives, crashes, and kills their child, they can feel awful and live with it everyday, yet we still punish them with prison.
Both the drink driver parent and the hot-car parents are negligent, both had no intention of killing their child, both made terrible decisions, both can be extremely regretful, etc. but society feels the hot-car parent is exempt from punishment? I don't understand why seen as different.

It's weird how people are so forgiving to these negligent parents despite the fact that it's their entire job to protect their child. Hyperthermia is one of the worst, most slow torturous ways to die and society is happy to shower these people with forgiveness and compassion.

I read an autopsy on one of these kids a few years back and it is to date the most horrifying thing I've read.
