The sad thing is that while teachers will always be mentors to their students, those with particularly bad home lives are probably more likely to see them as surrogate parental figures. If you have a teacher that's kind and supportive, it's more likely to help at least somewhat. But if you get one that's really unhealthy, you end up with this shit as a role model.

Not to be that guy, but we need better quality control across the board. You have so many teachers that abuse the shit out of their students. Just being in the public school system alone will net you enough of that. The school system tends to defend teachers over their students and you have parents that take no active role in their child's education and then end up surprised when something happens that they don't approve of.
