That's not funny at all. I've never got the Carlin worship that people seem to go in for (not directed at you, @Kheapathic -- just talking about it in general.) Carlin is to Lenny Bruce as Denis Leary is to Bill Hicks. Thin, weak imitations of the real thing.
I do agree with you that Carlin is insanely over rated, and I’ve never understood why he’s treated like some genius philosopher(I’m looking at you Penn Jillette) the rape joke in question is actually funnier than what was left on. You can read a transcript of it here. The theme of the joke isn’t so much about rape as it is about the idea of things not being okay to joke about and why he thinks different, since he feels what makes the joke a joke is that it exaggerated one element over the others. The ultimate punchline is him saying “these are the kind of thoughts that kept me out of good schools.” Implying they he’s fucked in the head. In the end, he is the joke, not the rape or the concept of policing jokes, and the funny part is how long he rambled on the subject before calling his own mind into question.
It’s a level of self-awareness that none of these modern comedians seem to have, especially people like Vito, Dax, or Nick.
