The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

I actually think this was the Firm's plan. You have to remember how things looked like they might be going a decade ago, when the forces that brought about the summer of love in 2020 were starting to show themselves. The Firm wanted an acceptable blackish woman in the royal family and if the communists seemed to be ascendant, then it would have been William and Kate, and their children, exiled to the US. Then any antiroyalist sentiment magically becomes racist!

This kind of maneuvering is how royal and aristocratic families have held on to their wealth and power since they lost the ability to directly control military force.

It turned out to be Cringe and Ginge, instead of Will and Waity Katie, who have to be the butt of jokes in the media. But if there's massive civil unrest in the west all of them go to their huge defensible holdings with water and farmland in Africa or the southern cone. If the nukes start flying, all of them have places in bunkers. Everything else is just PR.

If the Bri’ish crown wanted a partially black girl for Harry, there are many better options out there than Meghan, likely a girl from the commonwealth who would have respect for the crown. Meghan has been shitting on the crown nonstop from the very start of this thing. Her burgerness shows through by how little respect she has for anything associated with British royalty.

I am rewatching The Crown. Harrys predicament really mirrors Edwards, arguably worse IMO because Megan is an emotionally controlling gold digger and Harry is a minor royal at this point. Edward was at least king for a bit and still kept his title plus I believe he and Wallace really did love each other. All Harrys got left is Megan. Megan. :story:

From what I've learned he genuinely loved Wallace, but Wallace hated his guts and regularly ridiculed him (which he loved). Their relationship was a farce that Wallace never actually wanted.

It has always mystified me why Meghan seems to idolize Wallace. Absolutely hated the king, lived a fucking miserable life, and was rightfully despised by the entire world. My guess is she doesn't know anything about Wallace's actual life and instead has conjured some Lifetime movie fantasy of who Wallace was and wrongfully assumes that anyone admires her. Seems likely based on her previous fantasizing and ignorance and stupidity.

By the way, I want to mention something since it doesn't seem to have been mentioned in this thread before. I discovered a website called Lipstick Alley. It's a forum that seems to be predominantly for black women, and it just so happens that many (maybe most) of them don't take a liking to Meghan. So much so that last time I checked they were up to thread #8. (There was a thread #9 made but requires you to login to view.)

Just wanted to throw it out there to show that even black people know she's full of shit.

For sure. I think had Harry married some partially black girl with black ancestry Jamaica or Nigeria, you probably would get a clamoring for changing the rules so she could move to the front of the line for royal succession. Meghan was too much American trash to ever get that kind of consideration. She validated every Bri’ish stereotype of Americans and then some.

I misread this. I thought they were locking Andrew away (LOL), but instead they're just hiding documents about him.

Andrew needs to fuck off and die. If they're not going to prosecute him then they need to lock him in a cottage and never let him show his face so we can all forget he exists.

IIRC there was a True and Honest fullblooded black woman who married into the British aristocracy and integrated herself just fine. (I don't recall the name. I found this woman but I don't know if it's her.) So it's not as if black or mixed race people haven't ever successfully joined upper class British society.

I think the issue with Meghan was many things:
  • She was a dime store actress, and as someone (Charles?) said to Harry, "We walk out with actresses, we don't marry them" because they're the sort who tend to be crazy/have the wrong intentions/otherwise unsuited to the stress and duties of royal life.
  • Commoners who have previously married into royalty (British or otherwise) have had to prove their intentions to take the role seriously by doing work to prepare themselves before being given permission to marry. (Example: Mary Crown Princess of Denmark.) Meghan did none of that and the marriage was rushed despite William and others having serious concerns.
  • She was a divorcee, which despite Charles's divorce was something they still cared about when marrying into the royal family.
  • She was a manipulative grifter from the start and several members of the BRF and courtiers saw through her immediately. Some members of the public saw through it too.
  • Meghan came across as immature in her interviews before the wedding, like she wasn't taking the role seriously. She also kept intentionally breaking protocol which showed she was rebellious, which is an American trait but isn't what Brits want from their royals.
Actually from what I saw the British were more welcoming of her than not, even despite these things. Naysayers were in the minority. Her being American wasn't really an issue either. It was only as time went on that her true colors became apparent and they grew to despise her.

I'm very skeptical of a move to Japan. (Why Japan of all places? I can't think of any special connections or interests the two have in Japan compared to other places around the world. Seems far away from all of Meghan's buddies and her holy grail of Hollywood fame.)
In any case, if there's any truth to this, I want to point out that the Japanese don't appear to have a positive opinion of her (and given their extreme cultural politeness means they absolutely despise her):

And this video was posted on March 18 2021, BEFORE Spare and the other dirty laundry those two aired. Knowing how much the Japanese value loyalty and honor, if they disliked her that much before, I can imagine now they'll seppuku her the moment she lands.

It's clear she had a really retarded image of how court works. She probably thought that all the aides and courtiers were literal slaves who she could say and do as she pleased to. Instead some of them have worked for the royals for decades and would be quite able and capable of having a quiet word in the ear of their bosses, who would be appalled at the treatment being doled out to their faithful staff.
