September Update Status Report

Posted on September 1, 2023 by YandereDev
Hello!
I usually release a new build of the game on the 1st and 15th days of every month. However, I won’t be releasing a new build today.
I’ve made around 15 improvements and bug fixes to the game since the last build, so, potentially, I could just release a new build containing those changes…but I feel that the build would be underwhelming, since it doesn’t contain a “big new feature” or a significant amount of exciting new content.
I don’t want to release something that will just make you say, “Oh, that’s it? That’s all? Meh. I don’t really care…” so, I feel like I should just keep working on the game, and not release a new build until I’ve got something I’m proud of that I really want to share with you.
In case you’re thinking, “Hey, wait a minute! Maybe there’s no build today because he hasn’t been working on the game, and hasn’t made any progress at all!” I’ll post a video of my recent progress on my Patreon, just to pre-emptively kill any potential conspiracy theories that I’m not actually getting any work done.
I have a few more thoughts to share about the subject of recent progress and future progress. If you’re interested, you can scroll down past this cool artwork that was tweeted by Tangsen_Malum!

Recent Progress and Future Progress

This isn’t going to be super pleasant to talk about, but I’ve committed to being transparent and honest with you, so I’ll share my current thoughts.

As you probably know, my current priority is to complete every task on a “checklist” of tasks that I want to complete before I launch the crowdfunding campaign. Earlier this year, I felt like I was making massive progress on this Pre-Crowdfunding Checklist at a very fast rate. I was really proud of myself!

Then, my progress started to slow down. The checklist started to shrink at a much slower rate. I felt really guilty about that, so I decided to do something about it: I decided to cut way, way back on leisure time. I decided to stop doing daily video game streams and try to avoid recreational activities altogether.

I thought this would make development go by faster. “Surely, if I work for 14 hours a day instead of 11 hours a day, I’ll make more progress, right?” …but, it didn’t really work out that way.

Despite freeing up a bunch of extra hours to work on the game, my rate of progress actually slowed down after I banned myself from doing anything “fun.” Removing all recreation and leisure from my life didn’t make me more productive; it just made me more miserable. I started getting distracted much more easily than before, I became prone to procrastinating, and I began making a lot more mistakes than I previously did. Even if I was sitting at my computer with my fingers on the keyboard and Unity open on my screen, I just wasn’t getting much done.

My reasoning was, “If work is the only thing that exists, then, surely, I’ll have no trouble focusing on work!” But, focusing on one thing 100% of the time makes it incredibly difficult to maintain interest or enthusiasm for that one thing. I guess this is what people are talking about when they use the term “work/life balance” – without something else in your life aside from work, you get sick of your job incredibly fast, and then your work output suffers.

Previously, my mentality was, “I gotta get as much work done as possible before 7:00 PM, which is when I stop working to stream video games!” but my mentality became, “Because I’ll be working from 10:00 AM until 12 midnight, I’m sure that a lot of work is going to get done…” This made me more likely to lose focus on work. I kept thinking, “There are still a lot of hours left in the day! I’ll be fine!” but every day ended with me saying, “Huh? What happened? We’re at the end of the day already? But I didn’t get enough work done…”

It turns out that attempting to improve your productivity by increasing your work hours is like…attempting to satisfy your thirst by drinking poison. It’s counterproductive.

My grand experiment – “Let’s see what happens if I just completely cut all fun, leisure, and recreational activities out of my life!” seems to have ended in failure. It’s starting to seem like I should return to my previous schedule of playing video games once per day, since my current strategy isn’t working at all.

…but, what if I’m wrong?

What if the amount of progress I’ve been making is actually fast, comparatively to what my progress would have been like, if I had stuck to my original schedule? What if I actually have been super productive over the past few months, and I’m simply not acknowledging it? What if returning to video games will just make my progress slow down?

It’s hard to decide what to think. It’s difficult to know what conclusion I should draw.

I would love to be able to provide you with an estimate regarding when I’ll be done with the Pre-Crowdfunding Checklist, but it’s nearly impossible to do that when I don’t even understand what the primary factors contributing to my productivity are.

At the end of a recent blog post, I said a few things that are still pretty important and relevant:

“The progress that gets done over the course of a month is not dependent on what I planned to do; it’s dependent on what unforeseen events happen over the course of that month.”

and,

“if I realize that something is worth adding to the checklist, the checklist is going to grow. It will increase the amount of time that the game must remain in development for, but it’ll be worth it, since it will result in a better game.”

I suppose that’s still the best possible summary of the situation that I can provide at this point in time.

All I know is that I’ll just keep fixing bugs that get reported, keep making improvements where I notice I can make them, and keep making progress on the checklist with whatever time is left over.
Back on Discord, Alex pulls out the ban pistol in response to short skirts, but lets the user off with an implicit warning.

Someone else had the balls to respond to a question about why 1980's mode is more "developed" than 202X mode, saying that it was a "shove-it-into-the-game" kind of deal, and Alex had this to say. Surprisingly, he was also not banned.

For some reason I thought that Cameron left Alex a year or two ago and now I see that he is still there, only dumber and more of a coomer, yet I am not surprised.

Do you plan on reuploading the uncensored version somewhere? I can turn it into a torrent and throw it on my seedbox to permanently seed, where it'll be immune to any DMCA takedowns

I'd love to get a follow-up video about his real programming experience, I haven't stumbled upon too many posts going into detail about it

It's already on Rumble, my dude. If you need a download link, please, DM me.

Oh okay, I tried watching it there a few days ago and the video wasn't loading, and youtube-dl wasn't able to download from it, so I assumed it got DMCA'd from there too (not sure how rumble works). But I tried it last night and it worked just fine, so I made the torrent now

I rent a seedbox specifically for publicly seeding things that I want to share so I'm happy to keep this on the box until the day I die (or decide to stop paying for it)

I wonder if he'll try to use this news as an excuse to stop working on the game:
threads/game-developers-furious-as-unity-engine-announces-new-fees.171623
Alternatively, he may write an amusing rant.
This doesn't really apply to Eva because of how financially unsuccessful he is, but he is more than likely way past the lifetime install milestone so in the theoretical event he makes good money somehow, he's on the hook big time. Expect a spergout though.

Also does Eva use the free version or did he actually pay to remove the splash screen?

You wouldn't be bully so much if you weren't so ugly Alex. You should have taken better care of yourself over the years so you didn't suffered premature twink death, at least then you could at least lose your (anal) virginity.

For some reason Alex mentioning MiHoYo in any way comes off as pretentious. They make better stuff than he could even dream of, no reason to ever act as if he is on their level.

He can't even be consistent with his character's ages. He's like the fucking metronome meme personified.

Is it better or worse that Blizzard fucked up the same thing just as hard just a few days ago with Overwatch.

He admits that if they stick with the decision, switching engines isn't going to be an option.
Alex straight up does not have the coding knowledge to migrate over to Unreal, and is probably too snooty to consider options like Godot. Trying his insane levels of arbitrary depth conditionals randomly accessing straight data values in Unreals flavor of C++ would probably segfault (Hard, irrecoverable crash) constantly. Visual scripting would seem like it'd make it easier in the long run, but its only really useful for prototyping or as the top designer layer to well built C++ under it, not as the everything guts of a project. Godot meanwhile still has a reputation as that little indie-only 2d engine, even though its had a few solid 3d releases. Its only just recently started entering the widely viable space for most indies, but the public narrative is far from catching up on that yet.

And Alex is in a uniquely tricky spot with this now. Patreon and Crowdfunding would be counted against his rolling 12 month revenues, and he's absolutely over 1m installs. His Patreon isn't, and probably won't ever be again large enough to trigger the revenue thresholds. A kickstarter however, is revenue, and a lot of it. He'd end up in a 12 month period from the day that cashes out, with every install of someone curious about his frequent tiny updates triggering an install payout. And there would likely be a LOT of it, what with a kickstarter demo rolling out. He's going to eat shit on these fees every step of the way.

He's really hoping they backtrack, but they've just come out and tried clarifying rather than stepping off. They're doubling down, so he's probably not getting away from this. We may be able to say that the last relevant version of the very game engine Alex uses has come out before he finished Yandere Simulator. Does that get a new type of kill marker on the nose of this wild ride?

New pinned message because people kept messaging him about it.

He only mentions selling the game on Steam, and no mention of crowdfunding. Has The Plan changed again, or is he aiming to crowdfund, develop AND release on Steam within the realm of roughly nine months? That's definitely got to be the most ambitious "release date" to date.

I find myself curious as to what Unity has already implemented for tracking "new installs" and how long it's been present. Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if they counted freely released pre-Steam versions as "fresh installs" for the purposes of billing (Yes, I know how optimistic it is that A. Yansim will make it to Steam and B. Yansim will sell enough to meet the financial thresholds). I feel it's fairly likely that by now Alex has surpassed the lifetime install threshold of 200,000, even if we're not counting separate versions of the game as different installations...

Goddamnit the man finally said something I agree with.

I’ve already been seeing things about games being made in Unity being pulled from Steam, nevermind talks of remakes in other Engines. This one might haunt them.

On the other hand, corporate greed being the thing to kill YanSim definitely isn’t something I had on my bingo card. Unity see’s how seemingly every Gacha Game uses it, can probably see how big those fucking player bases are, and has the former EA president who wanted to charge people for in game bullets at the helm.

"When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip, and we ask you for a dollar to reload, you're really not very price sensitive at that point in time."
"A consumer gets engaged in a property, they might spend 10,20,30,50 hours on the game and then when they're deep into the game they're well invested in it. We're not gouging, but we're charging and at that point in time the commitment can be pretty high."
"But it is a great model and I think it represents a substantially better future for the industry."
It’s from an interview I can’t find the actual video of, but still - this fucker is now in charge of Unity

This feel like short term profit in exchange for killing the engine in the long run. What fucking timeline are we in that I hope Alex is right about something…

His arguing that unity will also accept steam numbers as the sole metric of install base is wrong, and one of the big concerns. Unity is pulling license numbers out of their ass, will bill you now, and 'remediate' later - The fraud department is not going to just chop a million dollar bill out because you provided proof of one of potentially dozens of avenues of game sales. Anyone who has ever worked with any involved licensing model (Fucking Oracle) knows for a fact that the vendor will absolutely stonewall, drag their feet, and force you to precisely prove down to every last contingency why their numbers are wrong. They put this in place to make money, not just waive fees arbitrarily.

Yes, this means they will ask you to prove a negative, and there's nothing you can do about it. Doubly so in Yansims case, as they can and will count the infinite distribution of the free version against you, as its just an earlier update of the same product. He can try and back and forth argue about it being a demo and whatnot but again, you're relying on Unity just accepting what you're saying. And if they refuse, you can either suck it up or take it to court.
