For my own mental health, I have to believe that a handful of people really do have good intentions when they set out to 'save' someone. But I think more often than not, it's just another way to manipulate, exert control and nurture codependency.

For sole people they cling to those good things that got them in the mess, and choose to ignore the bad when they manifest. It's like that with both genders tbh, and it's probably an evolutionary trait to male monogamous pair bonding easier.

Which makes sense. Nobody is perfect and even perfectly good relationships can be marred by something a significant other does, thinks or says that rustles your Jimmies.
