Anyone else find punk to be pretentious?

I'm not too invested in the culture but I do like a couple of punk songs. But goddamn do the ideologues get really grating.
"HAHA stupid right wingers don't get that we're making fun of them"
"What's that? You're some middle aged white man from middle america but you like our music? Fuck off nazi punk!"
I think it's one of those "Used to be against the establishment, now they're the establishment" things.

Basically. There's a pretty heavy punk scene where I live, and they're all about commie and tranny shit. They're all the typical SSRI/Weed/HRT pretentious art student types. People who unironically watch shitheads like Hasan Piker, and will not only tell you that they're vaxed approps of nothing, but will braggingly specify how many boosters they've gotten, I shit you not.

As much as I would disagree with a typical hard-leftist, I can still easily tolerate someone having a different opinion than me. What I can't tolerate is someone LARPing as an underground rebel while their same opinions are broadcast on fucking SNL and John Oliver.

Young and old, all losers and posers. Entirely superficial political idealogues who will believe anything up to and including publicly sucking off big pharma while claiming to be anti-corporate, as long as you frame their opposition as Rednecks/Christians/Boomers.

I don't find it pretentious, I just find it sucky.

Never mind. If I came across people who acted like this, I would find them both pretentious and sucky and I'd want them to get cancer.

Punk rock died with G.G. Allin. This guy purposefully wrote his lyrics to piss off as many people as possible, saying "commie trash" and "mary was a bitch and jesus is a son of a bitch!"

I don't even think he had any sort of agenda. He had an axe to grind against.....every human on earth. The name of one of his songs is "I hate people". And towards the end of his life, his former bandmates distanced themselves from him, and he had to record his songs almost by himself.

Punk isn't a style, it's a culture. But it's for people who don't just reject mores and norms, but are wholly incompatible with them. Punk is a place where the unwelcome are welcome. And the welcome are unwelcome. The scorned, pariahs, rejects and spurned are the core of punk.

However, this is not as true today, where such people as G.G. Allin would be embraced as "transgressive" and chaotic-good rebels.

I found that Punk was astroturfed even during the early 80s, around the time I discovered it along with the old friends I had unlike how the media portrays punk, most punkers listened to it only because it was promoted so heavily.
It was as extremely left-wing like so many on here said. Now, me being a anti-communist conservative Libertarian for a long time, I find most bands to be near goddamn unlistenable to me today, even for old school stuff my old childhood friends turned bullies listened to like Black Flag, D.O.A Discharge,Bad Brains, Charged G.B.H, the Exploited, Suicidal Tendencies, and countless others. The few punk bands that I do find listenable do are always exclusively Crossover Thrash since Thrash is my favorite metal genre,
What’s worse I found literal commies even back then inside the punk scene. What’s not surprising , those old punk friends actually turned their backs on me when I started getting into Thrash/Speed Metal later on in the 1980s.
Punks are not your friends, they will stab you in the back if they suddenly don’t like you.
What’s even worse, they like to sabotage their haters so that the haters are forced into the scene, like the rap movement, the cartoon community, the communist movement the troon movement, and so much other dumb as fuck garbage.
There is nothing redeeming about punk for 99% of the time, however, only 3 major good things came out of it,
1. Thrash. 2. Death Metal. 3. Black Metal. Those metal genres are several thousand times better then Punk,

Now, to respond to others in the thread
Punk is a place where the unwelcome are welcome. And the welcome are unwelcome. The scorned, pariahs, rejects and spurned are the core of punk.
This described my childhood former friends turned bullys in the 1980s. Look at them today, all libtard Antifa scum. I’m glad I distanced from them during the mid-80s when I got into thrash and speed metal. I made much better friends in most of the metal community.
It always was primarily well off children larping as "FUCK THE SYSTEM", while imagining we're still in 2004
Not just 2004 but in a small town in a mid-Atlantic state in the early-to mid 1980s. Rich kids will larp as oppressed as long as they are coddled and sheltered from the actual real world.
"HAHA stupid right wingers don't get that we're making fun of them"
They wonder why the young generation don’t listen to punk these days compared to rap or even metal music.
"What's that? You're some middle aged white man from middle america but you like our music? Fuck off nazi punk!"
What’s up with Punks hating white people when the genre was mostly started by white people?

I find punk to be bad and retarded.

Any band that isn’t sufficiently bad gets accused of “selling out”. The gatekeepers are there to ensure that a fifth chord never makes it into anyone’s progression, though all chords are fifths.

For the love of god, just headbutt the strings somewhere around the pickups, don’t you fucking dare pick out a melody! Save that shit for the two bar staccato solo.

It’s literally the participation trophy of music. Your super cool punk kids don’t talk about music they like; they riddle eachother over the names of bands that never even released albums and just did shows at the local bingo VFW hall’s basement. If you fuck up and ask someone “have you ever heard of.. “ and then say a band someone HAS heard of, you’re under suspicion for being a “sellout.”

And a “sellout” is literally anyone who has any kind of success. You’re supposed to suck so everyone else can sneer that they can do exactly what you do, because it’s ableist or something to be able to play music

Pretentiousness is anti-punk, yet modern punk is all pretension. So either go all the way back to The Sex Pistols and The Ramones, or go with the poppiest of pop-punk which embraces its entirely surface use of punk music and clothing without the pretense of an ethos.

Punk is now one of those 'if you say you are, then you're not' things.

I think it's one of those "Used to be against the establishment, now they're the establishment" things.
Just look at Rage Against the Machine - those guys are PRO machine. I wouldn't be surprised if "right wing punk music" like Negative XP becomes more popular/picks up more traction as the decade goes on.

At a local level, it's usually an excuse for lazy assholes to excuse their unwillingness to git gud at music while feeling self-righteous for being "indie" and "DIY". In my experience such people are also raging narcissists who want the adoration of crowds, social captial etc. of being a rock star without actually putting in the work to be a rock star.

The Marxist music critics latched on to it as a way to kill prog rock which they didn't think was black enough or something and thus bad, ignroing the fact punk is about the whitest thing ever. Not that prog rock is that great anyways. I spent some time in a message board for a famous prog band and everyone there was some kind of 50 year old bitter nutcase mad at the world. I'd say both fanbases are about as equally awful and the music equally pretentious, although at least punk fans may actually have sex sometimes.

@Syaoran Li, stop rating comments and get in here. This thread demands your presence.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Punk was a mistake, it was never good, and only two good things came out of it. One was early 80's goth rock/post-punk and the other was crossover thrash metal.

Punk was good when it was actually anti authority or RAC, not this faggot shit today where they shill globohomo or pop garbage like Green Day and I believe some damaged individual above claimed Good Charlotte was punk.

Bottom line is, I don't want to live in a society where I can't blast Skrewdriver and GG Allin in my car with the windows down while going 80 in a school zone.

Green Day went from "Fuck Bush, Peace in the Middle East" to performing for Hillary Clinton, as well as at the stadiums of the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros (whom the Bushes have deep connections to; the latter even has a Halliburton billboard in left field).

"Fuck You Dad" is a foundation of sand for a worldview, let alone a music genre.
