It's because everyone is too scared to talk about biological reality.In summary, African American women specifically seem to have some kind of affinity for Pica and the extent and scale of which is not entirely known. It is also not talked about much by social work practitioners and researchers.
At the barest of minimums, we have an entire segment of the population that is chronically vitamin-D deprived due to their skin color vs. the latitude at which they are living.
No part of the mainland US is below the topic of Cancer, and that thing runs straight through the Sahara. Everyone plugs their ears and shuts their eyes and pretends there are no consequences to people living more than 20 degrees from their "normal" amount of sun exposure (not even including modern indoor lifestyles at all).
We're too enlightened to think about such things. The sun doesn't matter. That's just silly, hippy stuff.
