I've been thinking this as well. Yesterday I saw a bunch of articles (A) saying that the municipal government in Chicago is considering a state run grocery store. Knowing that a lot of these initiatives are seeded from above, and global in scope, I expect to see some Canadian politician to float a trial ballon soon, followed by internal polling to see if the public here has been softened up enough by the attacks on grocery chains for the planned push. If not, a nice big tax on grocers that will inevitably be passed onto consumers, might do the trick.

The highest returns on food goods are baked goods/sandwiches from stores that have an in-store bakery and deli. Apparently, the 54% profit increase that Singh keeps quoting, is a deceptive figure. The conglomerate that owns the grocery chain had a 54% profit bump and that was due to selling a chain of gas stations in the western provinces.
