STARSECTOR - Best $15 you'll ever spend

fuck you for reminding me of DarkOrbit with the topdown graphics.
sure DO is isometric but when you turn on plebeian computer mode it becomes top down, great game ruined by greed but i'm glad this game is singleplayer AND moddable, also fuck furshit and w40k faggotry, sadly w40k is either retarded shit or it's done right, there's no inbetween and most are just retarded shit.
and of course: it has FTL ships, no multiplayer mode it seems so no playthru with another kiwi

So, I'm seeing a little confusion in mod names and I'd like to clear it up.

Interstellar Imperium is a fan-favorite mod adding a faction explicitly based on the Roman Empire. Their yellow-orange ships are weaker at base than vanilla ships, but make up for it with more Ordnance Points to spend, as well as unique packages that can completely alter how a ship plays, allowing you to specialize to whichever role you need.

The Neo-Nazi one is New Galactic Order, which was made by an unironic "Hitler really did nothing wrong" Neo-Nazi. Initial versions of it had their markets be named after various concentration camps, and the guy would often sperg unprompted on the forums about the positives of Nazi-ism. The game's developers didn't appreciate this, since the lead's grandpa literally fought the Nazis in WW2. While he did tone down the Nazi sperging in the mod, it was eventually removed, not for hurting fee-fees, but because he'd stolen spritework. The drama surrounding the mod is why no mods based on Nazis, explicitly or not, are allowed to be hosted on the forums.
Are the Space Romans from Interstellar Imperium a replacement for the Hegemony? Since that faction already fills the "militarist imperial remnant" role

No, competition. Hegemony hates Space Romans because they're using AI, which is explicitly against the law, but the Hegemony can't do anything about it because Space Rome has literal planet-busters (which you can field and use during fights if you're so inclined). Space Rome just wants the Hegemony to fuck off, but that's not going to happen.

So Space Rome is more of the upstart Republic challenging a well-established thassalocracy, rather than the Late Empire phase that it usually appears as?

I'm a bit fuzzy on lore (usually play Xhan), but that seemed to be the gist of it.

Ay, a fellow MVS chad. I like Blackrock Drive Yards, MVS, and Diable.
After watching Starfield fail as a space exploration sim I finally resigned myself that indie is the only way to go for this broad genre and bought Starsector.

I can't drop this thing; I tried an initial run, got burned out, modded it up, and am now running, among others, Diable Avionics. God, fielding a fleet of transforming Diable frigates supported by carriers full of de facto Gundams is the most anime feeling thing ever, and not in the "I need to be kept away from children" way but in the "I only get chills watching traumatized people beat the shit out of each other in giant robots" way.

Check around the Outer Terminus system for a fleet called "The Last Line". Defeating it nets you the Virtuous Wunder Wanzer. It's the most fun ship in the mod to fly. I usually keep Diable uninstalled purely because I love it too much.

You cannot buy it, you have to fight for it, but the mod author has the fleet intentionally fly off to out-of-the-way places to patrol, so you can go transponder off, beat up the fleet, steal it, and restore it without Diable being any the wiser.

You also may want to check out Arma Armatura. It not only provides new carriers, but also fighter, frigate, and destroyer-sized mechs you (and your officers) can personally command. Lot of good stuff in there.

I will say, after playing around with the skill, I don't foresee the current iteration of Cybernetic Implants surviving. Yeah, every officer just getting more Elite skills was kind of "eh", but giving every officered ship in the fleet a passive bonus in damage dealt and damage reduction (with said bonuses doubled for your ship) feels like an overreaction. My usual build has me sitting at 9% bonuses for the fleet and 18% bonuses for myself.

It does make "super-ships" like the Hyperion or Arma's Einhänder hilarious, though.

Necro, but massive Drama just went down in the Starsector modding community and it seems like a shit show Kiwis would like. I should also note I'm doing my best to piece this together but I'm having a hard time getting proof for what people said happened, so I may have some stuff in here I say happen but I don't have a screenshot to back up.
(Archive links in the spoiler at the bottom.)

There was a Mod called "Take No Prisoners" made by modder "President Matt Damon", it let you take prisoners from enemy fleets and talk to them and such. The mod is open license so people can edit it and make new versions. and at some point a person made a Fork of it called "RapeSector" which does pretty obvious things given the name, but it wasn't well known in the wider starsector community.
That was until a February 24th, 2024, when Youtuber IroncladLion posted a review of the mod "Iron Shell" which had come out a few days before hand. the video is 40 minutes long and for 3 seconds of the video he had a image of a RapeSector on screen. The Name wasn't shown, it wasn't even brought attention to, it was a visual gag for those who knew what it was.

Ok so from this point on we have 3 main places this Drama went down, these are the following:
The Starsector Fourms: This is where TNP was posted and the main mod sharing platform for Starsector, it is also the only official community for starsector.
The Unofficial Starsector Discord: Large discord server, ran by members of the community and main hub of Starsector discussion outside the fourms.
The Starsector Subreddit: The subreddit for Starsector, unofficial and somewhat inactive until the drama started.

Not long after Ironclads video went up, he was banned from the discord for "promoting sexual content", this started discussion about why he was banned and what the mod was.People claim the mods were going scorched earth in regards to the mod, banning anyone who named it or asked for details. Between Feb 24th and Feb 26th Matt Damon edited the mod page for TNP to remove download links, changing the subtitle and text for the OP post.

People were unhappy with Matt's removal of the mod, so later on the 29 he posted a new mod thread about "Take No Prisoners 2"MattDamon2.png
The mod wasn't out yet but promised to be Bigger and Better than the Original version, the FAQ even including a smug jab at RapeSector. This would be the Limits of the Drama's impact on the Forums for now.

The extent of the Drama on the Discord is unknown to me, it seems like most modders were either In support of Damon or weren't vocal either way as nothing has leaked out.

The Starsector Subreddit was full of discussion of these events, with the greater consensus being that Matt Damon was being unreasonable but that the mod was pretty disgusting. The Sub was flooded with posts ragging on Matt until the lead mod, "powerchicken" stepped in and made a rule against directly insulting modders. (This post has since been deleted)
This is where the drama stopped for over a week, with Matt Damon not doing anything else of note for this time frame.

on March 7th/8th however, it was discovered that within the code of mods Matt Damon was maintaining, namely Diable Avionics (2.8.1 and up) and Exotica Technologies, he had introduced code that would crash your game and corrupt the save. When this code was added I don't now, but it was discovered on the 7th/8th. Matt Damon outright said that the code "devours your save".
8oBQUc9.png
I have seen claims that this code would also trigger if you were using TNP from before it was taken down, but Matt claims it would only trigger if Rapesector was active.
This action rekindled the Drama, but now instead of if just being a modder taking down their own mod in a fit, it was now a modder adding code with no use other than to purposely ruin your game if you used a mod he didn't like to mods he didn't create.

Now prior to the code discovery, powerchicken had made a new rule banning the naming, discussion and linking to of NSFW Mods. The new rule was almost immediately suspended as the code discovery brought the Mod back to the forefront of discussion. As the discovery spread, however, Powerchicken took steps to limit the spread of the info. Powerchicken deleted one post regarding the crash code in Exotica, and locked the post regarding the code found in Diable, pinning a comment to the top of the post saying the following,

(This is the post after the mod unlocked the post)
After Powerchicken's actions, people started sharing screenshots from the Discord showing Powerchicken potentially being in support of Matt's malicious code.

Sometime during the 8th, the mods of the Discord Temp-Banned Matt in regards to the code, though it was clear some higher ups were still supportive of Matt's actions and it was unlikely the ban would stay.

Every Mod Matt Damon posted or heavily worked on had its download links removed. Shortly after a new rule was added to the forum rules,Screenshot 2024-03-09 at 05-32-14 Forum Rules and Guidelines.png
The Banning of Matt Damon on the Forum lead to his permanent banning on the Discord too, the subreddit following suit bit after the Discord.

Now, returning to PowerChicken, Some people have redirected their anger at Chicken after Matt was banned from every major Starsector community. With calls for him to be removed as a mod from the subreddit. Chicken's actions on the 7th/8th were very unpopular, and with what people think was a attempt to silence discussion about Matt's introduction of Malware to the mod, He's become public enemy number 1.
Chicken has attempted to defend himself,

Though these posts aren't being well received

Another mod has made a few comments, and it seems there is going to be some talks behind the scenes with other mods.Screenshot 2024-03-09 at 05-47-15 r_starsector - The status of powertripping in this community.png
Though I doubt these talks will lead to any outcome that people would be happy with.

I want to apologize if this post is half baked and not well written, I am kinda of a tard. I wish I could find more proof regarding some claims but its doubtful I will. Will update this post or make a follow up if anything else comes from this Drama, though outside Powerchicken getting Demodded I don't think anything will. Will edit to fix typos and other weird stuff if needed.

Minor Update: The Unofficial Discord was unlinked from the reddit, there was a post saying this should happen and it seems it did. The 2nd mod, Grievous, has made a comment regarding the power tripping claim, clearing up a bit of ambiguity and explaining the NSFW ban better.

Grievous seems to be defending Chicken though personally I do think there was some malice with the NSFW banning and the Thread locking shit.

I leave you with this shitpost I saw on reddit that lead me to making this post, it also contains screenshots I couldn't find myself so it does have some content to provide.

(this video predates his banning)

Good. I'm surprised that the rule banning fucking with user's installations because of the presence of another mod wasn't already in place, but I guess the admin didn't expect his users to be that autistic and petty (which, given that it's modding, is almost a given at a certain size.)

I know that some other mods had similar systems before, but Matt's code literally only existed to fuck over that one mod, at least the other mods had the excuse of the mod they blocked being incompatible with their mods.
There was also another mod that got nuked because the Dev did something Similar, though their exit was more graceful than Matts.
High Tech Expansion and Apex Design Collective have both been removed at the request of the author because they contained similar code to Matt's mods.

In the end the funniest thing about this to me is that now, the only remnant of any of Matt Damon's mods is RapeSector, the mod he was so pissed about it caused him to totally nuke his modding "career" to get one over.

Worth noting people are reuploading Matt's mods in various places, either plebbit or dickswords. That Dark Souls YouTuber Ymfah is also known for fucking with these cunts by removing their crash codes and making memes about it to their face. Now behold, this piece of shit.

IIRC the modding community has always been incredibly petty, one of their members going so far as to DMCA the mod bin on the starsector general on vg when it was still alive(?)
I'm surprised the dev finally instituted that rule given that people had been purposely crashing games if NGO was detected years back

Nothing makes me happier than modders adding malicious code to their mods because their ego gets so big they believe it's okay to do because they do it for "the greater good". Though the peak retardation happens when they add genuinely illegal malware as a form of "DRM" to their precious paid mods, like the QuantV guy.

I fucking love modders that get so far up their asses they believe it's justified to commit a crime to "punish the baddies", and then wanting to act like bigshots that want to make it big in the industry, even though stunts like these are guaranteed to have them blacklisted for being a potential liability to any company that might hire them.

I still don't understand how I, a filthy pirate, has a better understanding of piracy, copyright law, DRM, and all the do's and don'ts than people that actually make shit worth a dime.

I've been trying to get into this game the last few days. Unfortunately my time is a bit limited and everything's so in-depth it makes my head swirl. I know it'll be a lot of fun when I get into it properly though.
I haven't touched mods yet, bit bummed-out that the eve-online one is dead, that would have been cool. I've been trying to find a decent lets-play or guide that takes you through the start and midgame a bit but everyone I check is either endgame autistic and using shortcuts and not explaining shit or it takes them 60 minutes to explain what's already in the tutorial. Anyone have recommendations?
Also should I look into getting a few mods before diving in properly, like some QOL mods? The flashbang when shit dies is really annoying. I'd prefer not to add (even more) ships and factions when I don't know what's in the base game yet.
