I guess it's down to modern education sucking cock (sometimes literally) and not forcing students to actually read anything. These kinds of misspellings ("women" instead of "woman," "could of" instead of "could've", "could care less" instead of "couldn't care less") are a function of writing being a "secondary" mode of communication to most people, where they write what they hear (i.e. phonetically) rather than drawing from actual knowledge or experience with the written word. Functional illiteracy, I guess.

Of course, this doesn't explain how people can (repeatedly) see those same things spelled and used correctly and still not notice (or care) their own mistake.
