The fact that we have an ongoing land war in Europe, started by a man who has repeatedly and openly described his revanchist ambitions and intention to eat up huge chunks of eastern Europe (all the way to east Germany, if some of his lackeys are to be believed), is a pretty good reason to believe NATO is essential.
