Because he likes his satellite network not shot out of the sky.
Nobody will shoot out of the sky a US Government investment dude. It would result in retaliation at the same level. Russia has a lot of satellites too that would be immediately targeted. Satellites that provide assistance to the Russian army.
People need to cut this "OMG let's not provoke dangerous Russia" shit off. It's way past that stage. There's a war in Europe with probably 100K victims and Russia proper is already targeted almost daily, even with the limited possibilities of the much smaller Ukrainian state.
They have done nothing and will do nothing unless something critical happens, like some NATO army entering the Donbas.
Stop being so fucking scared. Russia was not scared to try occupy Kiev. What are you so terrorized about? Nuclear war is suicidal. Nobody wants to start it.
Chill

Not scared, just pointing out Elon Musk has absolutely no obligation to help Ukraine do shit to escalate the situation. Why the fuck would he want to be in the middle of that?

Elons moves - especially his visit to the border - are highly suggestive he is looking at a Presidential run in 2028/2032.

He has all of twitters data to use and deny others while at the same time catering to his audience statements that will get the best result.

He has higher ambitions than just owning companies

OK then the US government should consider denying him any funds and prosecuting his businesses as vengeance for refusal to support a US ally in its endeavor to fuck up Russia

If there's one thing that I always say, it's that the government doesn't have enough power nor does it abuse that power enough, and it should be coercing its citizens more to get involved in a war on another continent.

The US government has no authority to force Elon Musk, a private US citizen, to use his companies to further US military interests. The closest right they have would be to invoke the Defense Production Act but he is rich enough to just pay the fines from telling them to fuck off.

SpaceX is the only way for the US to get to the Space Station without going to Russia. On top of that, SpaceX is responsible for 80% of the global payload into space in 2023. So good luck with that.

Defense Production Act:

The government should do what it is already doing: create contracts with Musk/SpaceX which gives them (the USA) ultimate authority on decisions on how certain network infrastructure is used. Look up Starshield.

That takes it out of the hands of Musk, who is completely unqualified to make international relations decisions and does not want to be in the position of doing so, and into the hands of the Pentagon, who we hope still has some measure of competence and some idea of what credible threats are and are not.

This is legal and does not involving stealing anything or vindictively prosecuting Musk for invented crimes (like the Proud Boys).

The US Controls most of Europe mainly through the UN and NATO. Many billionaires are jumping ship to the Middle East or Asia. Unless you are one of the involved in the massive Western money laundering and slush funds currently going on as they decimate the West from the inside.

UK intelligence was directly involved in the Hillary Clinton hit job against Trump. Stay mad @teriyakiburns because this is a fact:

The US government has no authority to force Elon Musk, a private US citizen,
Governments have the ability to do lots of things, like murdering rebellious citizens abroad, question is only should they or shouldn't.
They also have the ability to expropriate.
To force people at the point of the gun to "integrate" schools.
To force gay marriage that nobody voted for.
List is endless. Your citizenship is pretty insignificant. So is your wealth - if the people that are truly in charge decide you're no longer useful.
But that is just politics and "What's the best way to rule and how". Yet nobody should be so naive to underestimate the governments that have black projects, black site prisons all over East EU, has Guantanamo, can invade a country at a whim if they are economically adversarial or just sabotage it, can drone US citizens with the wrong ideology.
Same goes for gulags, poisonings overseas, accidental leaps from the window and you know the drill.
