Counter-point to your thoughts about overpenetration, I would be more concerned firing buckshot because if I miss, not only is there a shot going towards a neighbors house, there is multiple projectiles that make it a hell of a lot more likely to hit someone or something important.Last night around 11 pm I had a tall faggot knocking on my door. He "wanted a light for his swisher" told him no and to keep moving. Luckily he fucked off. He tried it with another neighbor and was held at AR-15 point until the cops came and took him away. Apparently he was also taking pictures of houses and looking for a soft target.
Told the wife we need a gun. Bit of meth and people are un-intimidate-able.
I want a 12 ga. pump. She wants a .22. I think she is afraid of larger calibers (she's only 5'1"). I think I should take her to a range and rent a 20 ga. and see how she does. I don't expect her to ever use it, but I need her onboard. Budget is tight. Any suggestions on influencing her or recommended home defense guns? I am really worried about over penetration. Neighbors are close by.
There really isn't a good solution to overpenetration caused by a MISS that isn't somewhat sketchy in terms of performance against humans.
A full-size or compact (not too small) handgun is probably your best option for the situation you've described, where he wasn't making entry but was scoping the place out. If he does make entry you have the ability to prevent him from making entry permanently.
Additionally, with a handgun you have your other hand available for a phone (calling police) or a flashlight (who the hell is it outside?)
Besides, if it turns out it is little Jimmy from down the street who kicked his ball into your yard and wants to get it, it's probably going to be viewed as less extreme by his parents (your neighbors) if you answered the door with a pistol than a shotgun. I don't know if I am phrasing this the best way, but especially if you're in a rough area it is good to be on good terms with neighbors.
While I wouldn't recommend it, If you REALLY want a shotgun, then get the Maverick.
If my spiel convinced you, then try something from Canik (TP9 variants), CZ P-10, PSA Dagger, a used full size or compact Glock.
