I followed Terry long before he was super famous. And that's not a flex, just framing: Jim's right. That Vice article was what drummed up interest. And the dumb shits on IRC/Discord/etc that did the real damage were around even before that.

Those people were mostly motivated by trying to help and fucking it up constantly. Skitzos in the class of Terry need to take their meds religiously and they usually don't. Terry didn't. The problem was you had all these people going "We have to heeeeelp hiiiim he's the next Billllll Gaaaates" and no he wasn't, he was just a good systems programmer. Who didn't deserve what was happening to him. So most everyone - especially the non-jim-non-kiwi programmer retards - was like "Let's support him to keep him writing code" and that's not really what he needed.

Finally there's no real smoking guns with Terry. No ILJ, no Idea Guys, really. You'd have people telling him to do dumb shit on streams, but nobody said 'you should neck your bird' or 'you should beat up your mom', that was all him. In the end, the homeless druggies he fell in with did far more damage than the Internet community ever did, or even could have. I was actually excited when Jim covered Terry because I like Jim and I followed Terry and I thought it was going to be funny. And it was.

It wasn't meant to be honest criticism. None of the people who claimed Jim was responsible for what happened with Terry actually believed it; they said it because it's one of the few things that's been shown to genuinely bother Jim. It's obvious that Jim felt really bad for Terry, just like he felt bad for that pilot guy, because they were both extremely mentally unwell and vulnerable, and were being screwed with by people who are too stupid to know the difference between trolling some spaz and abusing someone who's mentally handicapped.
