Lol, Canada is where a type of sting called a ‘Mr Big’ operation originated, in which police create a crime boss character and dupe the suspect into joining a fake criminal organization made up entirely of cops, until the suspect trusts them enough to divulge whatever information they’re looking for. So yeah, not only can the Canadian police lie to you, they can make your whole life a lie if they feel like it.

I enjoy the Casefile podcast and they’ve done some great eps on this type of sting, I’ll try to edit my post with the exact cases cause I thought they were pretty interesting.

You're oversimplifying it a bit by saying that, though, and even if he is entirely innocent and she really is just out at a long lunch there's perfectly legitimate reasons to lawyer up. I don't know Canada's version of pleading the 5th but if it's at all close, doing it cannot be used against you in court EVER, and even the slightest implication by a prosecutor that it is even suspicious is grounds for a mistrial.
Saying "I have seen innocent people wrongly prosecuted before, I will not speak to the police without my attorney present" is a completely legitimate statement in every circumstance. You aren't acting defensive, you're exercising your leafstitutional rights to a defense.

If he has exonerating evidence that proves, conclusively, that he could not have done it, that's great, and it should absolutely be taken to the police. But it should not be him making that call, it should be his lawyer.

As for her intellectual capabilities I remember JF talking about her being very capable at math. It of course can be viewed as framing her for not being a retard to cover his bases. Like, there's notion for different types of intelligence IQ, EQ, JQ etc so that her problem is merely a speech impediment. Einstein also wasn't known for his speeches, you know. I don't disagree with you on any of this - but part of the issue here is at what point you have a right to legal advise. In Canada, I am pretty sure this would only come into play upon being arrested.

If your wife has disappeared, and the police want to ask you a few questions about her whereabouts to try and find her, are you going to refuse to say anything without a lawyer present? If you want to find her, offering up the last bits of information you have to help them do this is completely logical.

What if you don't have the means to hire your own attorney in those situations, do you refuse to engage with authorities as they look for your loved one until you are arrested and you have a right to representation? This isn't about giving up your rights, it's countering this idea that you should never talk to the police - even when your interests dovetail with what they are doing. In the case of a missing loved one - it's finding them!
