Regarding the ethics complaint "dismissal":

I'm not an expert on Minnesota procedure, but the idea that the complaint would be dismissed without him receiving notice is patently absurd. Having a pending ethics complaint is serious business to practicing lawyers. If you apply for admission to other state bars, they will 100% ask "do you have pending ethics complaints in any jurisdiction where you're licensed?" If Nick's understanding were correct, what's the proper answer? "Um, I don't think so, but it's impossible to know because the board doesn't give notice of dismissals"? That is retarded. The obvious answer is that the board gives notice to the attorney that the complaint has been dismissed, and Nick's complaints are still pending.

That's not to say I think anything will come from the Keffals-orbiter complaints, and the longer there's no word from the board, the better the odds of a dismissal. If they're going to move forward with a disciplinary action, they'll do it relatively quickly. If they're going to dismiss, they'll wait a long time. That way, by the time they get around to dismissing, the complainant has gotten over it and is less likely to bitch.
