US Hillary Clinton says Trump supporters may need to be ‘deprogrammed’ - In an interview on CNN the former senator and secretary of state also called the ex-president ‘an authoritarian populist’

Supporters of Donald Trump may need to be “deprogrammed” as if they were cult members, Hillary Clinton said.

“Sadly, so many of those extremists … take their marching orders from Donald Trump, who has no credibility left by any measure,” the former first lady, senator, secretary of state and Democratic nominee for president told CNN.

“He’s only in it for himself. He’s now defending himself in civil actions and criminal actions. And when do they break with him? Because at some point maybe there needs to be a formal deprogramming of the cult members. But something needs to happen.”

In 2016, in one of the most seismic shocks in US history, Clinton lost the presidential election to Trump.

The billionaire spent four chaotic years in power before losing to Joe Biden in 2020. Refusing to accept that loss, Trump stoked the deadly January 6 attack on Congress. That brought his second impeachment, which, like the first, he survived. He now faces 91 criminal charges (17 related to election subversion) and assorted civil threats but is nonetheless the clear Republican frontrunner to face Biden again next year.

Clinton said: “I think, sadly, he will be the nominee and we have to defeat them. And we have to defeat those who are the election deniers, as we did and 2020 and [in the midterms of] 2022. And we have to just be smarter about how we are trying to empower the right people inside the Republican party.”

Clinton was speaking after the fall of Kevin McCarthy, who became first US House speaker ever ejected by his own party thanks to pro-Trump extremists.

Clinton called Trump “an authoritarian populist who really has a grip on the emotional [and] psychological needs and desires of a portion of the population and the base of the Republican party, for whatever combination of reasons.”

Republicans, she said, “see in him someone who speaks for them and they are determined they will continue to vote for him, attend his rallies and wear his merchandise, because for whatever reason he and his very negative, nasty form of politics resonates with them.

“Maybe they don’t like migrants. Maybe they don’t like gay people or Black people or the woman who got the promotion at work they didn’t get. Whatever reason.”

Clinton said Trump’s “Make America great again” slogan, first in 2016, “was a bid for nostalgia, to return to a place where people could be in charge of their lives, feel empowered, say what they want and insult whoever came in their way.

“And that was really attractive to a significant portion of the Republican base.

“So it is like a cult and somebody has to break it, break that momentum. And that’s why I believe Joe Biden will defeat them and hopefully then that will be the end and the fever will break.”

It's starting to hit me, these days, just how much 2016, especially November of that year, just ripped us all apart.

It wasn't a clean slash, but it was a deep enough cut that eventually compromised the integrity of national discourse.

Now, all of social media is just lobbing insults and memes at each other

Trump's the symptom, not the cause, you abhorrent, stupid bitch.

The divide was always there, all that happened is that one half of the population suddenly realized that they weren't a massive majority of the country.

The unending fucking tantrum thrown since is over that and that alone. The knowledge that people who vote exist in large numbers who do not agree with them, and Trump has been made into their avatar of that fact.

That divide, is also why the U.S. was made as a representative, democratic republic with a separation of powers not just between the branches of the federal government, but also of different territories. So that people could have their political differences and needs represented on a local level despite being a part of a larger nation with people who might have a wildly different culture/political ideology than they do.

Which, because over the course of 200+ years we now have a strong, centralized government with more or less absolute power over the state governments, means that whoever controls the central pillar of power gets to enforce their bullshit on everyone else. Thus, the divide that was always there is now a serious, all-or-nothing issue especially given one half of the political spectrum has lost its fucking mind.

I say that half knowing that there's "moderate leftists", but they continuously and seemingly almost reflexively roll over for their fellow travelers further left than they are. More to say on that but yeah, this isn't something that sprung out of 2016's election results, it's something that was always there and would've been brought to the surface if Clinton somehow had won the election, too.

He's basically the United States anti-bodies mounting a defense. A goofy, slightly orange, masterfully combed-over defense... not going to knock it cause it seems to have sort of worked?

Crazy bastard woke up a lot of people, somehow and I'll say on some level I'm one of em.

I remember being scared when he first got elected due to all the fear mongering. Now I respect the crazy bastard, and kind of get it.

Clownhell world is pretty wild.

I remember being for him in 2016. My thought process was 'the country is a joke, the president might as well be too'. Ended up being the best politician of my lifetime, and the way TPTB reacted to him was extremely eye-opening even to a jaded cynic like myself.

Didn’t somebody already say this a while back?
Practically all the Democrats did, just not out loud.

At this point, if the man suddenly gets reelected, I would completely get it. Whatever happens then cannot be worse than how things are now.

If a politician accusing others of being in a cult is not peak irony, then I don't know what is.
Hillary Clinton is like Medusa in a way.

I thought Medusa was a Gorgon, not a cockroach.

RW doesn't estrange people from families or demand physical removal of otherthinkers. That's cult behavior.

Because she made you rock-hard?

If Hillary couldn't have this country then she was hellbent to use the entirety of her decades of connections to ensure there would be no country after that night.
