Trying to full-blown attack a heavily urban locality with your obviously less-than-great military capabilities and your obviously less-than-good generals and commanders in incredibly short notice sure is a good idea in the era of the ATGM. Especially when the "army" you're fighting can't really be decapitated because leadership is probably local and allegiances are half-Hamas and half-whoever-is-commanding-us, and they're all in the midst of civilians, not wearing uniforms and more than willing to fight to the last.

Depending on whether Hamas prepared at all for this possibility, if the Israelis rush this it could end up being a first Grozny-tier disaster. Military decisions made for political reasons (we have to attack fast because we're mad) are nearly always the worst possible thing you could do. I hope those Merkavas are going to the border and aren't meant for any offensive action any time soon.

It is a common misconception that Israel has epic US style gun rights. Those photos of Israelis at beaches and other public spaces with CAR-15s and other rifles are off duty IDF conscripts that are required to retain a weapon on their off time during service. Israel has gun rights comparable to Mexico, ie very crappy and difficult to legally own a firearm.

I wonder if this whole kerfuffle will show Israel the importance of an armed population, just so the common person can at least have a fighting chance against themselves and their families being featured in a snuff film. A fuddy bolt-action hunting rifle and 50 rounds of ammunition is not going to stop determined attackers, who are only breaking in to your house to kill you and everyone else inside. In reality, I'm sure the government is too terrified to even consider relaxing gun control to even allow people to own self-loading rifles aka "assault weapons" just due to the possibility of more violent ethnic conflict within their borders.

Honestly thinking about it unless everyone involved in the operation has night vision optics, going in a place like the Gaza Strip which has no electricity currently sounds like a potential nightmare for armored warfare. They already have the buildings and ruins but now any potential attackers could be harder to see then usual.

Guess we'll see what happens.

the jew army should have invasion plans ready to go, and israel is a tiny country so moving sufficient forces into position can be done really quickly. it's not like russia where they have to haul shit over thousands of kilometers.

also from what i know hamas is really lightly armed. light infantry plus the occasional improvised rocket artillery meme contraptions, that's it. i don't think they have an answer for the jew army using real firepower on them, and they won't fare very well in close quarter urban combat against jew infantry soldiers either.
