It's a sad case where innocent people of both Palestinian ethnicity and those of the Israeli nationality (and including tourists or visitors who happen to visit these lands on certain days) get in the cross fire. With all the weapons in free circulation and the boom of the arms trade in the past few years, and considering the build-up to this (it can't have been easy to make this many rockets and stockpiling them) I'd be surprised if Hamas didn't have enough RPGs, ATGMs and MANPADs to mount a very serious defense of Gaza. Even if the invasion plans are already drafted (I'm sure they have a million to pick from) putting them in place and coordinating everything will be hard for an army that has no experience doing anything of that sort while meeting any kind of resistance and who by all accounts still has a lot to worry about in their own territory. I'd draw parallels to 2014 but I don't want to be threadbanned.

Plus, they can make rockets that more or less fly towards Tel Aviv, I'm sure they can make improvised explosive devices of other varieties.

There's a reason that the geneva convention requires you wear a uniform to be under their protection.... If you hide among civilians, you're asking for indiscriminate killing or at least large civilian casualties. Basically you're requiring that your enemy commit war crimes to defeat you.

That's why it's a decent idea when your force is smaller and less well equipped than the opposing force (and you don't mind if some people die), it further galvanizes civilians into blaming the attacker and siding with you. Plus, even if they wanted to, it's hard to force fighters with either no training or who are already used to wearing whatever to use their uniforms properly.

Trying to full-blown attack a heavily urban locality with your obviously less-than-great military capabilities and your obviously less-than-good generals and commanders in incredibly short notice sure is a good idea in the era of the ATGM. Especially when the "army" you're fighting can't really be decapitated because leadership is probably local and allegiances are half-Hamas and half-whoever-is-commanding-us, and they're all in the midst of civilians, not wearing uniforms and more than willing to fight to the last.

Depending on whether Hamas prepared at all for this possibility, if the Israelis rush this it could end up being a first Grozny-tier disaster. Military decisions made for political reasons (we have to attack fast because we're mad) are nearly always the worst possible thing you could do. I hope those Merkavas are going to the border and aren't meant for any offensive action any time soon.

That is assuming Hamas will have the supplies and capability to engage what is essentially a company of Merkava tanks coming down along with infantry support. You can disable one or two vehicles for propaganda vids, but you'll still have the problem of taking on a massed mechanized counterattack. Also, while plonking a hull-down Merkava from the front arc with an RPG is a good shot, it probably didn't do much to the tank due to its armor profile /tankautism.

To the question of why is Hamas doing this, I can add my own opinions.

Palestine is not really seen as anything other than a tool to beat Israel's head with by the rest of the Middle Eastern countries that support it. They supported it because they don't like Israel, period. But now that the US is slowly strarting to withdraw from the ME at large, there's a power vacuum that could end up in war especially with ethnic tensions between Iran and the Saudis. The ME, especially Saudi Arabia has been seeing Israel as a partner to keep things from blowing over, hence the warmer talks in recent years.

Thing is, Israel will want formal recognition, and that means withdrawing recognition from Palestinian claims. Hence, Hamas needs to stir the pot to put in wrench in those plans.

I could be wrong though.

For all those talking about the Israelis "stealing land", the Israeli government forcibly cleared out it's settlers from the Gaza Strip in 2005, which was deeply unpopular in Israel, as a unilateral attempt to make some sort of peace. Unlike, say, with Egypt, the Palestinians basically turned into retards, elected Hamas, and basically killed any chance of some end of "settlements" in the West Bank.

The Palestinians are their own worst enemy, and going into Israel proper (and not some Israeli settlement in Gaza, which, I remind you, don't exist) to kidnap and murder Israeli civilians is going to force the Israeli government to actually beat the Palestinians in Hamas down to nothing.
