Regulars go to the front, reservists mostly backfill all the boring but necessary jobs like border checkpoints and standing around government buildings just in case. That frees up capacity while avoiding the scenario of fat retards trying to breach buildings and ending up as extra hostages.

As a unqualified observer of this war (I live over 6,000km away from Israel), I must say, that Hamas picked a great time to start a war.
With the judicial turmoil going on in Israel, they smelled blood in the water and went on the attack.

Hamas didn't really pick a time; they started the war to prevent the diplomatic normalization process with various arab countries (which is in its final stages) from being concluded by putting the Israeli government in a position where they can't make necessary concessions to Palestinians due the the public mood following the attack by Hamas.

The Israelis know that there aren’t enough shelters and no one can leave a crammed as fuck area like Gaza. They’re going to genocide the Palestinians. The Israeli PM said in Hebrew he was going to raze the Gaza Strip and I think they’ve been trying to get this response from Palestine. Wouldn’t be surprised if they let this attack happen as an excuse to ethnic cleanse some more land for the settlers.
