Question to farmers from Israel. Considering the opinions of people you personally know and general mood of the population, what kind of resolution to this conflict would satisfy the Israeli society at this point?
I can't speak for everyone in Israeli society, but the Yom Kippur war, all things considered, is viewed by most now as an "honorable" war. Even though it was a surprise attack, and was also considered an existential threat, fighting was largely confined to the military (of course, this may be as much to do with geography as anything else, but still); the Egyptians performed well and so did we, once we got over the shock. The Sinai was returned and the peace since then, while cold, has lasted.
I'm not going to get into whether the precedent of Israel exchanging land for peace turned out well in the end; that's dead and buried now in any case. I just want to contrast the above with the current Hamas butchery, which was a sadistic orgy of murder, rape, and pillage committed by subhuman animals against innocent civilians, Jews and non-Jews, men, women, and children on internationally recognized Israeli territory. I know without a shadow of a doubt that these pieces of trash would behead me and every other Israeli they could, and broadcast it to the world, if they get their hands on us. So ideally? Nakba 2.0. Let them go to Sinai or the ocean; it's us or them.
What kind of resolution can Israel realistically achieve, all things considered?
Realistically? Depends how long the war lasts and who gets drawn in, but I'd say an absolute minimum of 100,000 dead, including many, many innocent civilians. There is widespread consensus that, as per the thread I translated earlier from the left-wing Haaretz journalist, letting this occur without a reprisal that will shock the world is an existential threat to the state and that many more innocents will die without it.
What are the major implications for internal and external politics of your country going forward? Please be as extensive or short as you need. Appreciate it.
Everything will change.
