To be fair to Paraguay, when they declared war they had the largest and most technologically advanced military compared to their neighbors. The idea of national armies was still fairly new since up until that point you still had a system of professional soldiers and not the levee en mass that the French Republic had popularized. On paper, a victory was possible if they didn't count on the Triple Alliance's massive manpower reserves.

Hamas doesn't really have that level of insight. They went in thinking their showing would turn the whole Arab world around then and instead they got the world to lose all sympathy for Gaza in a single day. Palestianians are not just a nusiance to Israel, they're also a nuisance to other Arab countries.

Personally, I think all the human suffering involved in this conflict is horrible. (And the Palestinian and Israeli children definitely don't deserve any of this.) But I still don't want the U.S. to be involved. Atrocities happen all the time that go completely unnoticed by the American public. Why do we need to involve ourselves in Israel?
