I'm not convinced this wasn't orchestrated so he could put the PL persona to rest. I think we were fed a final arc to get everyone re-engaged with PL so they could let someone pull back the curtain.
There were too many slip ups for them to be not to be deliberate IMO, I think he brought Fleshy on board is so there would be a plausible reason for the mistakes to start occurring.
