They're not terribly invested in what's happening half a world away, so something like "slitting the throat of babies" is shocking and engages them, and is pretty knee jerk "these are bad people".

I am having some more in depth conversations with my partner and some of our friends, but for most people it's just "it's really horrible and I don't want to talk about it" or "I find what people are saying on social media really scary". Admittedly I'm getting this from seeing people in work or in social settings, which is not exactly conducive for a deep dive into the ethics of warfare, but the question was about the most common takes you've noticed.
