Micheal Ceras character and Jonah Hills characters don't get the ending they want because they want to deceive the girls they want to fuck, and the girls aren't in on it.

By contrast, Mcloven doesn't get the ending he wanted, but ends up better off because the cops knew he was bullshitting from the start and just played into it from the start.

I always saw that movie as being about trying to hold onto childhood. Jonah and Cera are afraid to drift apart due to the uncertainty of what it means to be an adult once high school ends, so they try to drowned that fear in a hunt for sex. Fogel meanwhile was in a rush to grow up which lead to his fake ID and as a result had to spend the night in police custody getting a harsh dose of reality that ultimately leads him to being more childish and paling around.

So while Fogel learns to accept his current position with a new found confidence, The other two declare there they don’t want their futures, but ultimately have to accept them as the escalators literally pull them apart in the last scene.

Really I consider it to be one of the better coming of age movies from there decade.

Every single one of us would. At most, we'd pretend like we wouldn't for a week before we crack it open and start blabbing like a gibbering fool.
