Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
The worst sin I see very often repeated is that developers seem to think that their product is the only thing I do with my computer. No it isn't. That's why it's not ok your website/application hogs 100% of a CPU core in a tight loop showing a static screen doing nothing and that's also why it's not ok to take 50 GB of disk space for files you could've compressed. This pretty much just guarantees I'll never use your crap. Out of sheer principle.
I could find some random autistic fucker's ramblings tucked away somewhere buried in the ass end of a search result
Try wiby.me. There's not tons on there but it has a lot of that old internet charm.

In Counter Strike 2 (Formerly Global Offensive's) I noticed a correlation between mutes and skill. A few months ago I found out how to unmute them and realized it's 50/50 between someone with a really annoying mic or voice and someone who's just genuinely good at strategy and the other team decided to abuse that reporting feature.
I haven't noticed that. The only thing I've noticed is users that are automuted typically have a good reason for it. 90 percent of the time it's related to genuine toxicity and overall asshole behavior.

Sounds like someone can't handle the bantz...
Oh no, I love the bantz. I'm shocked I've never caught an automute for my banter to be honest. What I can't stand is the whiny 15 year old zoomer that cries everytime he dies and blames the rest of the team for being absolutely garbage when he's the nigger weighting us down.

MS makes it a big deal that they're partnering with Dall-E 3 to have their latest AI generation on their browser. Now, within days of that announcement, they've "lobotomized" the tool to prevent anything remotely "offensive." Celebrities, copyrighted material, seemingly innocent prompts, no go.

If they did not want people to take advantage of AI, why create it in the first place? And another thing, why are people using it to recreate 9/11 or whatever political meme is out there? I don't even know who to blame for this.

I'm pretty sure having Homer Simpson do 9/11 courtesy of MicroSoft Bing is not good publicity.

Ultimately they only want certain corps of people taking advantage of it. It's like watching social media evolve from the message boards of the 90's--It seems to make sense, it is new, shiny, and fun for all and then it turns into what it has become now.

I don't like the new trend of cars being so computerized.

Same with all this e-home shit. I'd much rather have my 2 ton floor tv box then all this app downloading, voice command garbage.

There are theories that they (the companies that put out these text and image generation AIs) are doing it on purpose so they can get better at censoring things; train another AI to be a filter so that people can only generate milquetoast and unoriginal things.
And another thing, why are people using it to recreate 9/11 or whatever political meme is out there? I don't even know who to blame for this.
Why? Well there are several reasons. Some want to push the boundaries of what is acceptable - you know like what "art" used to do. It can be thought of as a way of rebelling against the bland, designed by committee garbage that Hollywood (and other big media) churn out these days. What would horrifying events look like if they were depicted in the same style as a pixar movie?

Think of it as culture Jamming. Use characters or art styles meant for children to depict dreadful historical events.
Others just want to quickly make memes in high quality.

Other times, people want to make actual political statements that aren't in line with mainstream media but, they don't have the artistic skill or talent to do so.

Some want their sexy waifus to be generated but, having attractive women in mainstream media these days is rare. In fact these might get censored next.

Watching people with no artistic skills be able to create the things they want is actually pretty amazing. I hope that the free and open source models are able to pick up the slack.

Tech trend I hate: Infantile or """funny""" error messages. "Woopsie doopsie, the program made a boo-boo!", "The gerbils running our server are struggling to keep up! Try again in a minute."
Oh fuck yes. I actually commented about this on a certain message board and got OK boomer'd into oblivion.

I don't like the new trend of cars being so computerized.
They always take it just too damn far. Ex., tech that turns off my dome light after 15 min., or disconnects the battery at 20% charge so I can start the car. That was great. But now cars have a BMS system that tracks every amp-hour drawn to/from the battery, and requires special procedures to charge, jump, or replace. I guess it has something to do with always having enough juice to operate the electric power steering, which is just more... <sigh>

I've always used thunderbird for desktop email but since switching to windows just used the basic Mail app. It was simple but met my needs and I was too lazy to set up another email client. Well, Microshit just forced an update to Outlook and are now pushing ads down my throat. Not only do I get shitty ads in my desktop email client but they show up in my inbox as forced spam email and MS want me to pay for the privilege of not seeing them.

Back to thunderbird I go, Fuck you MS.
These ads have been in the web version forever, just don't even bother with m$ products unless you absolutely have to. They have reached the limit of their company and are far into the nickel and diming stage.

Governments charging extra fees/taxes on cars, based on engine displacement, in addition to tightening fuel economy regulations, have led some auto makers to go way too far with using 2.0T engines with Hybrid systems, resulting in combinations that seem extremely Rube Goldberg-esque. The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC63S E Performance is one of the worst offenders of this.

This quote from the said C&D review says it all:

The source of motivation is the biggest change versus the previous generation. That model used a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that somehow managed to channel the brawny character of AMG's big naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8. Now, AMG has chopped the cylinder count and displacement in half, switching to a 2.0-liter turbo four—but before you walk away in disgust, listen to this: 671 horsepower!

To reach that lofty total, the heavily boosted M139l four (itself good for 469 horsepower—an incredible 236 horsepower/liter) is teamed with a rear-mounted electric motor. The motor delivers up to 201 horsepower and is fed by a 4.8-kWh battery that can be charged by either engine or cord, making this a plug-in hybrid. There's also an electric motor on the shaft linking the compressor and turbine wheels that spools up the turbo; it also keeps the snail spinning when the driver lifts off the gas. There's a 400-volt system to run that e-motor (and to facilitate the automatic stop-start system). A nine-speed automatic transmission again employs a clutch pack rather than a torque converter, and the rear motor gets its own two-speed gearbox. Finally, the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system can distribute the torque from the engine and e-motor to either axle in any percentage from 50/50 to 100 percent rearward. Aside from minor details, this is the powertrain from the 2024 C63.

The sheer complexity of this drivetrain, makes it seem like it won't even survive the typical lease periods that German auto makers design their cars around.

Online enforcement has went from regulating a community within reason for everybody involved to now being an egregious moderation system that isn't explicitly clear on WHAT is even enforceable and WHY.

There's more focus on moderating voice/text chat than outright cheating.

Based on this, if somebody catches you uttering profanity in game chat, you risk a strike on your record that stays for six months.

I have had a fear for a while that online games will become so pozzed that nobody will use in chat anymore. It won't be worth talking to anyone or asking a simple question - you could be banned for the most innocuous remark. Even in private conversations (voice or text) you could your account being disabled for anything you say.
At that point people would need to create communities that are silent in game but communicate entirely outside of it. Discord is the most likely candidate in spite of it being strict but, there are other platforms that are much better for privacy like Guilded or Matrix. In theory it could be possible to develop a mod or some kind of overlay that appears as in game chat but, doesn't send anything in game and instead sends text to whatever outside program your using (Discord/Guilded/ Matrix).

I don't use comms anyway, but it's quite telling how "social features" in gaming is now pale imitations of social media that will likely be disabled in a few months' time. Who would blame people for not using a mic outside of party chat? Who wants to deal with that?

I hate fucking twitch their vod playback feature constantly boofers and barely works, there doesnt seem to be a good sorting or search function for the fuckin things and now twitch doesnt even let me load the website because 'we detected your browser and dont support it lol'.

Like cunt I am sure your shithole website works on waterfox and if your too retarded to make it do so then I am happy for your website to fall down a giant hole.

Twitch works just fine on vanilla Firefox (since at least 102-ESR and now on 115-ESR). I can't attest to using Twitch heavily, but it seems to me that all major functions work properly. I can watch streams for a decent length of time without any stuttering or audio issues which fucking surprised the shit out of me, considering how I'm running a hardened Firefox profile. I can even manage my account without much effort, though I detest that Twitch requires me to disable Medium Mode in uBlock Origin to fiddle with my account settings or my streamer dashboard. Streamer dashboard appears to work fine, though I lack VODs to download so I can't attest to that working at the moment.

Circling back to what I wanted to whinge about: I don't know if this is a tech trend, but I'm starting to become painfully aware of amazing open source projects that are stewarded by fucking exceptional maintainers. I can't ever bring myself to support Mozilla as long as they're willing to give disingenuous cry-bullies like Taylor Lorenz a platform to speak on, despite committing the same fucking "crimes" that right-wing extremists do which Mozilla speaks so vehemently against.

This is such a fucking buzzkill because Firefox and Thunderbird are still fantastic pieces of software that have come so far in recent years, yet Mozilla's utter inability to stop shooting itself in the foot keeps countless people who are sick of Chrome or Outlook from ever wanting to give them a shot. It don't matter how many times I try to extol the virtues of the igneous vulpine and how it's the browser that Tor's based on instead of Chromium; Mozilla will just find a way to vocalise some genuinely contemptible sentiment that'll make me look like a fucking clown for trying to stick with the goddamn web browser I've consistently used since I was an autistic preteen getting into flame wars on RuneScape forums.

Beyond Mozilla, what else is there?
  • Libreboot, a conceptually fantastic piece of software that's maintained by an obnoxious tranny who cares more about their life story than giving quality code. Fuck it man, just run coreboot instead. The code isn't even that substantially different to warrant giving Libreboot the time of day.
  • Basically anything that is officially sponsored by the Free Software Foundation or is actively maintained by the GNU project. This ain't a jab at the developers for countless unrelated projects. Rather, it's a jab at the GNU Project and the FSF for being completely unable to divorce their politics from the code they're trying to promote. This is a critical reason why Linus Torvalds vehemently disliked GPLv3 and led to him distancing himself from the FSF.
  • Brave Software, which maintains an excellent Chromium fork and spent the better half of the pandemic relentlessly shilling crypto integration no one asked for. It wasn't until the crypto collapse happened when Brave finally started posting more shit about the browser on their company blog instead of more crypto bullshit. Look man, I love BAT and I'll gladly keep BAT active to accumulate them shekels to fork over to this site. That's fine by me. I don't fucking like having Gemini and FTX cards shoved in my face on a fresh install, nor do I like constantly being reminded of the Brave Wallet I have no use for because I already have a separate wallet application.

miss: videos being only horizontal

diss: vertical videos because of "smartphones"

There's the claim that vertical videos "feel more genuine" and "spur of the moment" and horizontal videos "feel overproduced" -- BS from "smartphones" and "social media".
I miss the days when having a video in portrait mode was something that was mocked by majority of people online. Nowadays, with that shit being the norm because of niggercattle, you get recycled shit like "portrait video with bars after being converted to landscape, with bars after being converted to portrait..." ad infinitum where you're left with a video made for ants.
