Community Munchausen's by Internet (Malingerers, Munchies, Spoonies, etc) - Feigning Illnesses for Attention

Quote isn't working, so

" It’s going to take a lot to convince him to come out of that fear response during recovery. I feel like shit being a confidant because his family knows very little about any of this, he’s embarrassed by the whole ordeal."

This guy sounds like he is actually sick. Not pretending like our Princesses here. I wish him much luck and recovery.
For most human beings, being sick is embarrassing. And scary. The lizard brain in the base of your skull tells you that if you go outside and expose your weakness, you are going to be picked off by a passing sabertooth tiger, and that you need to hide in your cave until you're well.

Muncies are not only attention whores, their brain is broken on a level that is completely incompatible with basic survival instincts.

When I'm sick I want to hide under the couch and hiss at people, which is basically the same thing.

There are a lot of people who are the opposite way, though. Not Munchies--maybe they're not Munchies yet, but just one bad diagnosis away from it--but there are a lot of people who get mildly ill and relish the opportunity to be the center of attention, to receive visitors like a queen, to have their phone blowing up, to give their nurses complicated drink orders when family are around to show off the power differential.

This is mostly middle-aged women, but also recall the "man cold," where the mighty hunter and provider flops on the couch in the living room, exposed to all who are trying to go on with their lives, and demands to be waited on hand and foot.

In conclusion, there's some kind of "Munchie trait" running through the species, and we should periodically release wolves into suburbia but I haven't figured out how to help them overcome the concept of doors yet.

maybe i give people too much benefit of the doubt, but when regular people enjoy attention like that, i just assume they feel neglected otherwise and are bad at communicating that. i certainly cannot fault middle-aged women who are commonly put on the backburner taking care of everyone and are the default caretaker enjoying being pampered for once (well, except the bossing nurses around bit). attention is a normal social need, and everyone enjoys being taken care of sometimes, the issue is when it becomes dysfunction.
so many of our munchies are sheltered young women who had smoke blown up their ass growing up, found out they're not actually exceptional or special, and promptly decided to give up on life. it's both pitiable and detestable, to be so deliberately helpless.

somewhat related to my previous post, but i always had a theory that any illness-related social group will inevitably be dominated by munchies. munchies are the most invested into appearing to have an illness, they will feign the most serious and severe symptoms, and they have way more energy than actually sick people (both because they're healthy, and because they have nothing else going on in their life). so these groups spiral more and more into victim mentality.
i seriously wonder what kind of damage have munchies does to the actually sick who have fallen for their doomerism. the insistence that nothing can be done and that any common sense advice (exercise, diet) is ableism, the hostility to doctors and promoting the most extreme of treatments, the promotion of the worst outcomes as inevitable - it's basically the munchie version of blackpill.

sorry if it's too offtopic.

Smarter people than me have said it better, but munchies who are young women of means who realize they're not special, don't want "grown up" responsibilities and retreat into an existing sick role in their society--in the past they might have done well in religious contemplation, mystery illnesses a symbol of sacrifice to God. Slightly later they could take to their bed and room and be a perma-child, never married off. Now the signifiers have changed and they can communicate with each other easily, instead of each being in her own retreat. Somehow, Disneyland fits into all of it, too.

They're the troons of the chronic illness sphere; always online, no interest in working on themselves, here to brag about injustice they've suffered and demand that the entire world change.

Well, you can see that with Katie Stanina. She's doing better now, luckily.
Guess I should update then. When we left off she had to get dental surgery but they were worried because the first round, she had a bunch of seizures from the anesthesia and ended up being rushed to the hospital. This time the surgery (which removed six heavily damaged teeth) was performed in the actual hospital in case anything went wrong.

And it did. After having a bunch of teeth pulled she started seizing again and ended up in neuro ICU.

Back home she wasn't doing much better.
Screenshot 2023-10-15 at 03.29.28.pngScreenshot 2023-10-15 at 03.29.39.png

And then she got scammed. I guess she paid a scam phone bill and as a result did not pay her actual phone bill so her service was cut off.

From the hospital pic it looks like the teeth they pulled were in the front of her mouth. This older pic from when she got the trach out shows the damage she had going on. From what I understand from her posts, she had a mix of acid erosion, damage from being on the vent when she was in respiratory failure, and cracked molars from gnashing her teeth during seizures.

But overall yeah, seems to still be doing better. One day in the ICU vs weeks now that her actual health conditions are being treated instead of hyperfocusing on the ones that don't exist.

Ok, I’ve been gone for a while but I want to introduce to you a new, somewhat famous (50 million views on YT on one video) munchie but I’d love some help doing a timeline/post, also gauge if anyone else is following him. I’m a mobile retard - I have screenshots/etc and someone has the time, reach out to me on here.

Still has a gofundme that’s active and posts pill porn and IV shots, while travelling the world all while making heaps of money and constantly saying “I did this while battling Lyme, psychosis from Lyme and “autoimmune disease.”

Him? Did you actually manage to find the elusive male munchie?

A Stiff Man Syndrome malingerer came through my emergency department this weekend. Immediately on intake: "I need something for my pain and my anxiety and my nausea and my itching! I can't move my arms or legs!" as she proceeds to lift both of her arms over her head to adjust her pillow. God, these losers make me wish I could write orders for euthanasia.

Archive absolutely everything, that's step one. I don't know if they have the time but you can ask @Kate Farms Shill for advice.

Many of the most commonly used anticonvulsant medications are notorious for causing or exacerbating periodontal disease, too. In particular, some of the older agents of this class, including phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), valproic acid/divalproex sodium (Depakene/Depakote), and phenobarbital are known for causing gingival hyperplasia, or overgrowth of the gums. If you've ever noticed a Tard Baby (or Adult) with a weirdly gummy smile, it's almost certainly due to long-term use of antiepileptic drugs. This can make it really hard to keep the teeth clean.

known for causing gingival hyperplasia,
I remember seeing this in the NEJM clinical images (which is an awesome resource, Luna Buna could earn a spot in there I reckon) and never forgot it.

 gingival hyperplasia.jpg
Figure 1 A 17-year-old boy had generalized tonic–clonic seizures for four years. When the seizures began, a computed tomographic scan of his brain and an electroencephalogram were normal. Treatment with 300 mg of phenytoin per day was subsequently begun and continued unsupervised for a period of two years. Examination revealed coarsening of facial features and severe gingival hyperplasia (Panel A), brisk deep-tendon reflexes, and cerebellar ataxia. Withdrawal of phenytoin was followed by marked regression of the gingival hyperplasia within three months (Panel B); however, ataxia persisted.

Anxiety? Nausea? Itching? I hope you offered her some nice hydroxyzine. :)

We've come so far in modern medicine, but we're still kill or cure for so many conditions. So many horrific congenital conditions could be eliminated in just a few generations with mandatory genetic counselling. *sigh*

Yes we could eliminate a lot of suffering in just a few generations, with what we know now. For instance, Jews have a much higher incidence of schizophrenia so maybe we should start there, then move on to the blacks who carry that gene that makes you chimp out and attack people.

My sister was absolutely shocked to learn that the fact that her kids didn't manifest the family malady was pure luck, not her superior genes and parenting. Those kids are having their own kids now, and let's just say that genetic inheritance is a bitch.

it would require slightly more than that. people would actually listen to their advice and choose the medical interventions required to screen out embryos with genetic conditions. i can't speak to other countries, but if you have proven heritage of deleterous mutations in the UK, the counselling is optional. you are not forced to get tested, and you are not forced to do anything on the basis of the results of that testing.

given the number of people who seem totally unable to follow basic medical advice, and people who reproduce with no regard to their offspring (cf Alex Dacy), it would take a bit more than genetic counselling.

i'm not advocating for stronger interventions. i don't pretend to have a clue how we reduce suffering and maintain individual liberty in the face of sheer stupidity and selfishness.

When my mom was in the hospital getting all sorts of shit done, spinal taps, constant random dyes for machines to see, medications with awful side effects, whole 9 yards, yaddah yaddah. She looked over at me, full of tubes and in pain and said in what must have been her way of coping through humor "Why can't all this shit be like Star Trek already?"
I think about that a lot.

You should've just used the rainbow sticker.

Nah, my hospital system is fucking retarded and pampers the users and abusers the hardest. My chief of staff is obsessed with survey scores above all else and encourages us to write orders to aggressively address the patient's immediate needs and taper them down later so they don't later report that they were undertreated and our system's arbitrary survey responses don't drop. That's her top priority.

It was obvious this loser wanted the cocktail, so they got the morphine, Benadryl, and Phenergan (with Norco and Zofran first line, but none of them want the weaksauce, and the nurses give them what they want so their leadership doesn't harass them about survey scores). It's getting hard to give a shit about being conservative with treatment anymore with all the Zoom meetings every other week when the patient satisfaction scores are shoved down our throats yet again because the pillheads didn't get their precious "q2h" on the IV Dilaudid someone threw at them for their alleged tension headache.

The other hospital system in the area (which has a male chief of staff, unsurprisingly) isn't like this. They kick people out for obvious malingering. They encourage providers to hand out restraint orders liberally. They arm their security and allow them to tackle violent patients. I don't know why I'm still practicing here. This is my first career having script privileges and it's all been in this system, but I've never heard of another hospital system where providers are pushed so hard to give liars and manipulators literally everything they want, yet here we are.

Sorry to rant.
