Bossman went live and played runescape for a bit. then got off because he was losing (it's rigged), tried to get juice for slots (not keno) but there were no juicers in chat so he ended the stream.

With Bossman being obsessed with (losing money to) Keno, I wanted to set out to learn a bit more about it. I think gambling is interesting both from a mathematical and psychological perspective. Now, I am in no position to psychoanalyze anyone, but I think we can all agree that something about Keno has Bossman hooked.
I found this post on stakes forum with a couple of people talking about “Strategies.” The first guy talks about having 4 sets of 3 numbers he likes to use, another saying they go one at a time, many talking about patterns they like, and so on. Dp10011 in the thread eventually wised up and dropped the game. Though I suspect did not give up gambling, so not much credit there. And Wassouf asks the important question: Are there really strategies that work?
The answer is obviously no. If Keno is properly random, your distribution of picks does not matter. But I think it is this strategy talk that has Bossman and many others hooked. He, like others, thinks there is a way to game the system. But the game tells you what the house edge is. 1% for Keno. Not the worst edge, but still an edge. For those that don't know, the edge is what percent of you money the house expects to take from you per bet over time. So while each bet results in X% loss or Y% gain, it all averages over time to 1%. For reference, roulette carries a 5.26% edge for most bets.
However, after reading that I got curious. Keno, while not having any pattern strategy, could still have an amount strategy to it. After all, Keno does give a lot of choice in how you set up the game. 4 different risk tables and 1-10 tiles to pick. Could it really be a 1% edge for every combination?
Short answer: Yes. Yes it is. All of that option for risk and tile count is another illusion of control to keep you hooked thinking there is a way to "win."
TL;DR: Keno is gay. The house always wins even when the game isn’t rigged. BMJ is wasting his (other peoples) money. All thing we already knew. I just wanted to put some numbers to it. I like how astronomical some of the odds get. The odds to hit all 10 tiles is about as good as winning the lottery. On average, I think the lottery is better odds.

Long answer: There is actually a little bit of variation to the edge. Not enough to make the 1% edge a lie, but enough that you can see the difference if you do the calculations. Which I did.

A quick explanation:
(Everything is done in decimal. Multiply all values by 100 for percent.)
P(X) refers to the chance that X tiles from the tiles you picked are also picked by the RNG.
X Tile(s) refers to the total number of tiles you picked.
P(Profit) is the probability that a “Money making event happens.” So, the probability you get a payout greater than or equal to 1.
Probability is calculated as ((Tiles Picked CHOOSE X) * (40 – Tiles Picked CHOOSE 10 – X)) / (40 CHOOSE 10). Essentially, all the ways to get X tiles from your set times all the ways to get the rest of the tiles from the rest of the tiles divided by all the ways to pick 10 tiles from a set of 40. You can look up the choose function for an explanation of how that works. Excel calls the function COMBIN.
In the X Risk Expected Values table:
The X axis is the payout for the number of tiles hit.
The Y axis is the number of tiles picked.
The expected value is the amount of money you should expect to retain. To get %Edge, simply do (1 – Expected) * 100.
Expected value is calculated as the sum of all probabilities multiplied by there corresponding payout values. So in the low risk table, P(0)*0.7 + P(1)*1.85 is 0.9875, which is the amount of money you should anticipate to get back every bet. Every dollar in yields 99 cents back.
So with all of this, what is the takeaway? The edge varies by about 0.4151% depending on how you pick tiles and risks, but might as well always be 1%. Your absolute best edge is picking 9 tiles on the Low Risk table. Your worst is 2 tiles on the High Risk table. Also interestingly, BMJ seems to have picked (most likely on accident, and I would put money on that) the best edge you can get on the High Risk table since he always does 10 tiles on High Risk.
The other takeaway is that BMJ could be losing the same amount of money (all), a lot slower with more opportunities for hitting to get that dopamine rush. The lower the risk, the better the P(Profit) for any given picked tile set. The best P(Profit) is 79.5771% with 10 tiles on Low Risk compared to the abysmal P(Profit) of 19.6855206% BMJ plays at. From an outward appearance, it would seem that BMJ would want the more frequent hits to try and "Climb", but I think subconsciously he actually likes the infrequent hits because it makes them more special when they do hit. Perhaps I`m off on this.
If BMJ played on the Low Risk table, maybe we would have a chance to breath before he throws all his (borrowed) money at Stake. The outcome would remain the same: he loses all his (borrowed) money, he begs for more money, we get a good laugh.
