The conjecture I've heard is that there was some conflict between ancient proto-Hebrews and a kingdom that was a client state of Egypt. It's kind of like if thousands of years from now Nicaragua is the center of a civilization with a myth about how their legendary founder fought in single combat with the evil American president, as opposed to there being a guerrilla movement fighting a US-funded faction.
That's what I said.
Additionally, rushes don't grow in the Nile. That is a Levant riparian ecosystem being described.
But in the Sinai, there was also a (now dried up) lake that had a river flowing from it that might have supported Levantine plants.
