31-year-old dog in Portugal that had been ranked as the world’s oldest dog ever has died, his owner said Monday.

The guard dog, called Bobi, died over the weekend in a veterinary hospital, Leonel Costa told The Associated Press.

Bobi lived on a farm in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal with Costa and four cats. He was born on May 11, 1992, when his owner was just 8 years old.

In an interview earlier this year, Costa told the Associated Press that Bobi’s secret to a long life was good food, fresh air and lots of love.

“Bobi eats what we eat,” said Costa. What’s more, Bobi had never been put on a leash.

Bobi claimed the Guinness World Record from Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, who died in 1939 aged 29 and had held the record for almost a century.

Officials at the Guinness World Records on Monday said they were “saddened to learn of the death of Bobi, the world’s oldest dog ever.” In a statement on their website, they said Bobi lived to be 31 years and 165 days old and died on Saturday.

Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed of Portuguese dog that has an average life expectancy of some 10 to 14 years.

Aside from that - just look at him. Clear eyes, walks comfortably, only a little bit of grey around the muzzle. This dog would look good for *a third* of the age they claim he was. There is no way in hell a dog could live to be 31 fucking years old, which is 2-3 times the average lifespan of a dog, without some eye clouding and arthritis, *at the very least*. I have a dog about half his alleged age, who is in good shape for an old dog and often mistaken for much younger; even so, you can see the telltale signs of advanced aging if you look closely. 15-16 is *old* for a dog. 31 is *impossible*.

They're making this claim for attention. Simple as.

I think in general dogs and cats by extension would have a slightly longer average life span if you fed them fresh meat over canned/dried pet food. Most pet food has preservatives that eventually cause kidney failure. It just takes a decade or so it's the main reason why they don't use it in human food.I don't think it would go up by a ton to be honest a year or two on average. It would also be prohibitively expensive to regular pet food.

Is it just me or does the Bobi in this image (7 years old @1999) have a prominent white foot on its front left leg but


no white left foot in this image (2022)

The dog in the 1999 images also has a white muzzle but bobi does not.

Bobi has a tiny bit of white on his muzzle but normally when a dog ages, hey gain more white (especially around the face), not lose it.


Also, that dog is morbidly obese. There's no way a fat dog like that would live to 31 being obese.
