I will make an attempt to rail back the thread to F1nn with a subject that I was actually hoping to explore in detail at some point. Is something some of you may think is pretty absurd to explore in detail here but the mere idea of posting about such a sensible topic for the terminally online gender inclined peoples of Discord in the fucking Kiwi Farms tickles something in my brain.
Voice Training & Acting fundamentals with Sleepy Pink Muslim Queen (previously known as Woke Blue Muttlema)
That's right you cretins, we are delving in and some of you might end this little lecture with a some insight about how to get your way across this unforgiving world. Before we start, I'm not a professional, just someone who had to take some speech therapy and could only get work because of what I learned.
Regardless of how acquainted you might be with any transgender centric thread here you probably are familiar with the kind of voice they can produce and its nature. Some of the oldest and most used public resources on how to feminize the voice (let's face it, you weren't thinking about pooners here) usually tackle larynx control as a fundamental for gender perception of the voice, which is to say almost every person you have read a thread on is familiar with the swallow technique. It's very simple, you hold a swallow for as long as you can without holding your breath until you build enough muscle control to lift your larynx at will which in turn unblocks a higher pitch.
Now, this isn't wrong but two very obvious problems arise when people do this exercise on their own and use it as the only venue to explore their voice: 1. Most people force it and end up hurting themselves, 2. The larynx and therefore the pitch isn't as important to the gender of your voice as one may think. Think how many male lolcows have whiny voices, ergo a higher pitch but you don't mistake them by voice with women. I once wrote briefly about how Quinton Reviews had an extremely effeminate way of talking.
Consider that your voice is but the sum of your degree of control not only over your larynx but also your vocal chords, soft palate and tongue. Your habits also play a role on how people hear you. Most people don't know jack shit about how to talk correctly beyond just lacking the vocabulary to transmit a message.
It was in Dylan Mulvaney's thread that I off-key mentioned how it perplexed me that a theatre kid that also happened to be a flaming homosexual had a worse notion of how to do a female voice than your run of the mill VC troll, and that last namedrop is a great way to start because unironically a good deal of voice trolling tutorials are better at getting the point across than stuff made specifically for trans women.
My favourite joke on this subject is that the best path to be able to make that coveted e-girl voice (regardless of your gender mind you) is knowing how to make a good Kermit the Frog impression. I wish I was joking but turns out that it makes a lot of sense if you stop for a second to appreciate all the components. New York Vocal Coaching (among some of the best resources free or otherwise in voice work and singing) not only has a voice breakdown of Kermit but also component exercises to further understand what is being explained. To save you time a GOOD Kermit impression doesn't involve really doing anything with your larynx or your vocal chords (ergo, isn't really about pitch), what you need to focus on is how you position your tongue (clenched) and soft palate (raised) while talking which as you probably guessed ain't super easy to do but once you mastered it is far more comfortable than perpetually trying to sound like a chipmunk. Also, if you know how to do it properly you won't hurt yourself.
In layman's terms:
If you know how to raise your palate aka speak through the nose... your voice turns brighter.
If you know how to clench your tongue aka speak through the throat... you have enough control to not strain your voice.
But wait, Kermit doesn't sound like a girl this can't be it. And you aren't wrong. Think how you see Dr. Girlfriend (specially after the 2nd season) as a woman despite her voice.
A very important aspect that seems to be neglected is how women actually talk. Now, not two women speak the same but generally they tend to speak more rhythmically and with a wider pitch range (see, not totally useless) than men do. All of the aspects of the voice you may be more familiar with in this context can be classified as an accent and what F1nn's merry band of misfits interprets as a female accent may as well be considered a hate crime. Even if you aren't gullible your voice can be shaped by those around you, case in point that when you are surrounded by goons you can usually expect to only be able to sound like one.
Both pros and trolls usually agree that a good way to find a foundation on which to build a voice is to find an inspiration; trolls usually go for stuff like Mean Girls or Clueless or just about any Valley Girl Classic since that is a very easy way to explore an stereotypical feminine accent (c'mon, Valley Guys sound like total fags) but if the goon squad did they never graduated to other influences to build their own voices. Consider the VG accent like falsetto, a trap to your progress as no one talks like that. Same goes for anime, specially if all you watch is hentai or shit set in high school (and may God forgive you if it's both, I won't). With that said, don't go around skinwalking people just because they might fit in the demographic you as an actor want to represent.
In summary, the first step for a great voice is knowing how to listen and who to listen.
