Not if it was through the VA. They've been reporting people en masse to NICS for being "mentally defective" regardless of voluntarily seeking treatment; that means depression, PTSD, age-related problems (i.e. inability to handle one's own finances, poor memory) etc.If he was voluntarily committed there’s no problems in legality re: his guns.
It started as the NICS Improvement Act of 2007, signed into law by Obama, and the process has been on the books for over a decade now, but they only really got the ball rolling circa 2016.
I personally know several other vets who sought voluntary out-patient treatment for PTSD and depression, and then suddenly started getting denied on background checks years later; they had to get lawyers to find out the reason.
