Another thing I just remembered re. "I TOTALLY LOVE EDM":

DId you know that Daft Punk was "underground" in 1995 and Wu was all about that? Wu also knows about raves and the being arrested because you had E on you or (gasp) were LGBT.

And I'm sitting here, thinking "Wasn't Daft Punk known since their first album?" and look up their chart positions. Sure enough, one of their first records, "Da Funk", released in '95 and is lauded as their first commercial success, with top 100 position in major European markets.

Their first big Album "Homework" had even greater success in '97.

But I suppose being unknown in the US means that you're underground or whatever.

Like every "my generation had better music" rant that's trotted out by wannabe tastemakers, John tacitly ignores the fact that the past only looks good because of time filtering out all the shit. Actually, he halfway recognizes it by bitching about Hootie and the Blowfish fans.

Not to mention the internet totally killed the concept of a unified music sensibility (which had already been dying since the explosion of new genres in the 1970's, to be honest). Great music is still made, but John just wants to stay in his comfort zone and assume the lowest-common-denominator shit that makes up top 40 mainstays like Beiber at ALL reflects the taste of a majority of the population.

Man, re-reading that thread mentioning stories about Wu on campus is hilarious as fuck.

"He came in listening to an ipod one day and like 2 min before class was supposed to start screamed out, as if singing along: "Elvis. Was. A hero to most, but not to me. He straight racist." I saw him like 2 weeks later in the union bookstore wearing makeup, pear earrings, and a sports bra."

"I too had polysci classes with him - think his name was John Flynn or Flynt. Truly bizarre human. Even John Bruce hated him and that guy was an idiot."

"Very wierd guy, always ordered tofu."

"I remember he had some sort of girlie looking dog that always had a "someone please rescue me from this freak" look on its face. We called the dog Precious because of its similarity to the dog in Silence of the Lambs and Flynt's similarity to Buffalo Bill."

"Ends up, John was dancing out of control in his living room. This was at like 4 a.m."

"I really did feel sorry for that dog, no telling what he did to it."

The Tofu bit had me cracking up for some reason.

What's the deal with Katherine Cross though, she of the fake British accent? (Steady on, Randy LOL)

It seems to me that her "one for all, all for one" pro-tranny attitude is actually rather anti-trans, as it ignores the really that some troons can be shits.....just like every other category of humans. The fact that she chided Randy and bent over backward to be forgiving and understanding of "what wu was going through" *LOL* seems to me one of the most ridiculous things in the logs.

That and her fake Brit accent is just really, really bad. Like, worse than Mike Meyers in Inglorious Basterds. :)

If you wanted to try picking which one of the anti-GG/FemFreq gang was going to go furthest in life, I think Cross would be a good choice. She's shown herself to be a skilled political operative, and she's climbed up from a nobody to being one of the chief movers of Silverstring Media.

In the parts of the chatlogs I've read, she's always on professional and on point. She doesn't get emotional or act frivolous the way the others constantly do, and you can see she was always working to steer the idiot-child personalities around her in a productive direction. That was largely a futile effort but it was her springboard to Silverstring Media and her famous appearance reflected in the background of Anita and Colbert's portrait pose.

I'm not sure that she feels a strong loyalty to trans people as much as she wants to create the perception that she feels that way so they'll be loyal to her. The combination of "you're trans like me and we stick together" and "you have power and influence" has probably gotten her a lot of service from trans people who feel ignored and marginalized otherwise. And Cross was perhaps the most cynical in her use of Brianna Wu out of all Quinn's clique, manipulating Wu on the behalf of people who she knew saw Wu only as a tool to advance their agenda. Once Wu's usefulness was over Cross had no problem dumping her.

If you ever watched the anime Legend of the Galactic Heroes, I think Cross aspires to be the Oberstein to the best Reinhard she can find. Anita is far from the conquering ruler who she probably envisions serving under, but Anita's a stepping stone towards that goal. I have a feeling her path will take her into the political arena sooner or later.

Does anyone want to see more digging done on Cross? I read a bunch of her writings back in the day and I can share some info on her roots if there's interest.

Your take is much more nuanced than mine, and undoubtedly more correct. I personally would love to see more...

Isn't Cross also the oldest though? It's worth noting that most GG people (Both anti and pro) are 20 somethings with low-grade social issues. Cross is old enough to be past all that shit.

Fascinating. Go for it.

She's kind of had a few moments of outspoken nuttery, mind, but I'd be very interested in reading your finds.
