I'm actually of three minds about the leaks in general.
On one hand, it's a complete vindication of a ton of GG's longstanding claims. It's also a great example of just how far these idiots were willing to go to push an agenda, and it's frankly chilling just how far they went with it. This was a group of people who wanted opposition to their agenda to be a permanent stain against the speaker; the sort of thing that would result in the ruination of careers. It's easy for us to sit here and laugh now about the likes of their saying that any GG supporter deserved to have their careers and livelihoods destroyed, but it's far less funny when you consider that a number of people
did lose their jobs specifically because the followers of these unpleasant fucks thought that an opinion online was worth destroying someone over.
An opinion about fucking
video games, no less.
This infamous tweet led Arthur to have a little meeting with the police when someone called a Bomb Threat into the GG meetup.
Similarly, your average Kiwi knows that doxing isn't as big a deal as it's made out to be, but we've also seen what people following the Antis
did with this information - from the
TotalBiscuit Incident to
countless minor cases of death threats, bomb threats, and offline harassment cases these people brought about. I've not had to bring this up in a while, but despite claiming constantly that Gamergate is responsible for harming them,
the only ones repeatedly on-record with supporting these attacks has been the clique themselves. The reveal essentially blows the lid off this, and reveals the clique to be openly guilty of what they're blaming others for.
Sarah Nyberg's exposure led to @le0pirat3 being banned from Twitter; that was another Izzy Galvez special.
On another, it's too late, and likely won't amount to much. The clique pretty much already self-destructed. Once again, it all blew up in their face, like it always has. But when we step back from the leaks, we realize just what colossal fuck-ups these people were. We know now that Dina went in well in advance hoping to push a bullshit agenda, that Nyberg was a liability they knew about months ago (and still tried to do damage control on), and they tried to keep a leash on Brianna Wu, which
ended about as well as one might expect. Despite having so much concentrated power, the assistance of the mainstream press, and all the money that came with that, they
still failed against a group of video game-loving sperglords on the internet. Within a year, Zoe Quinn would go from victim of everything to "that idiot that went before the UN with a report citing Jack Thompson and Lyndon Larouche." We'd see all the GJP backers of Quinn fall from grace, from Leigh Alexander to Ben Kuchera, we'd see Alex Lifschitz lose his connections because of his Critical Distance sperg-out, we'd see Sarah Nyberg exposed, the troons turn circular firing squad, and Bob Chipman blow up his own career for good measure. On every single venue, they ultimately lost. And while it's very easy to point to areas GG kicked their ass, ultimately, Gamergate really only had to
exist for these people to destroy themselves.
This touched upon just a few of the big connections these asshats had with Social Media companies.
Fact is, we've known for a very,
very long time that this clique doesn't have anywhere near the power it thinks it does. Despite all claims to the contrary, public opinion was never on these peoples' side. How the public felt about Gamergate was irrelevant from the start; Quinn had been a firestorm of professional controversy long before the word "Gamergate" had ever been mentioned, and Anita Sarkeesian's videos had already gotten widespread criticism for their bullshit - there's a reason that none of them allow voting or comments, and so many of the videos put out by members of the clique disable the same. Fact is,
they've never been able to work outside of an echo chamber. Want to see this in action? Check out
Wu vs Pakman and laugh your ass off as Wu tries to act like an actual human. Lightning round: see if you can keep a straight face with
Arthur Chu's follow-up interview, where he tries (and fails) to defend the clique's own double-standards. Double or nothing: Watch Kluwe versus Mercedes Carrera and
watch as the porn star demonstrates that you can peg someone verbally.
But the third part of this is the most terrifying one to think about: Can you imagine what would have happened if these people
weren't fucking morons? They were already in collusion to this degree, exhibiting this level of control on social media, and involved with this widespread an attempt to damage anyone who went against them. Even with these people being like this, a lot of the worst offenses committed by these shits we wouldn't have believed if the evidence hadn't been right in front of us. Thankfully, their ranks included histrionic shrieking professional victims, convicted sex offenders, several insane troons, and a bunch of people with egos, impossibly, larger than those of Jay Geis, and I think, hilariously, this may have been the most important aspect of the entire Gamergate song-and-dance for the Internet as a whole. People are going to be aware of groups like this in the future, and I think they'll be increasingly unwilling to nibble the bait as time goes on.
