Brianna Wu / John Walker Flynt - "Biggest Victim of Gamergate," Failed Game Developer, Failed Congressional Candidate

I'd just be happy to see Wu sperging in the midst of all the other lunatics. Just the thought of conversation happening between them all when Wu is part of it is enough to make me salivate.

Could you iamgine what she'd be like surrounded by likeminded people and spinning freely because of the promise of extreme privacy, because those logs will never be seen by anone? Hohohohoho.

My first thought when I saw them talking about her was exactly this. I'd have loved to see her trying to spin damage control.

Disappointingly for our amusement, for all of her ego and sperging about stupid things at the drop of a hat, one thing that Wu is very self aware about is her place on the progressive stack. This is why she consistently has to preface her idiotic opinions with "as a ...", in order to preemptively establish a measure of authority about a subject. Unfortunately for her (unless she comes out as trans, which isn't happening anytime soon) the only class of person that she can "punch up" at are straight cis white males. Everyone else has way more oppression points than her. She'll never go head to head with someone who can claim to be more oppressed than her, and that group is riddled with them.

She'll probably release the iOS versions, but I'm betting the Steam version won't see the light of day. She's already laying the groundwork for an excuse and will probably say she's cancelling it due to the fact that people are going to rip the assets for porn (and apparently sending her emails about it). I'm wondering if I'll get a DMCA on that video I did with her creepy characters in VR... It's still horrifying, if anyone is wondering.

It won't help, iOS games can have their assets ripped too.

Yep, those are the ones I used :). From the original release before Wu's "improvements" (provided by Mr. Duck, if I recall). But Wu just needs an excuse, not necessarily a good one. My prediction about just iOS being released is because as of the last update I saw, Wu had updated the binaries on the Apple store, but not on Steam for quite a while. Unless that has changed, I'm guessing the actuality is that the PC port is completely broken by her tinkering and that Wu is scrambling for a way to save face, at least among her circle of followers.

There was an update to the Steam repo less than a day ago, but there's no way to know what changed.

Would it trigger with SteamDB if you just inserted dummy text into the store page or something? Wouldn't put it past Wu to just change some text or images to be able to say that the game in the store has been updated.

Ah, I missed that one. I've never uploaded stuff to Steam, but I'm guessing that is an actual file upload as opposed to just a change to the store page. I thought Steam required a couple weeks to vet new files before they go live, but maybe since its technically an update to what was already there that doesn't apply.

Maybe I was wrong and we actually do have PC-flavored luls ahead of us.

Rate me optimistic if you like, but I do believe Wu's game is basically finished, for the most part working (at least on her machine) and will probably be released next week, barring further laziness by Wu.

I think most of the delays have been caused by Wu's general lack of work ethic, and glacial pace of getting anything done. In fact, I think the game was pretty much ready to ship in March this year, and only Wu's continual failure to put the finishing touches to the thing and finally put it to bed have been holding back the launch. I would hazard that Wu's work rate was a major contributing factor to Amanda getting herself a new job before seeing cupcake crisis completed.

I think we can expect nobody to really care about R60 SE, outside probably another nepotistic editorial on iMore. It'll be released to no great fanfare, and Wu'll crawl in to some new niche to pretend she's relevant.

After Wu's EDM music rant, I'm halfway expecting her to say that LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" is a song based after her own experiences way back when she was totally rocking out in Mississippi with the other Klan members...

Also, this is me being completely spergy, but is there any evidence to her listening to KMFDM other than she saying she does? I've been listening to them a lot recently and I honest can't see them being that big in her wheelhouse other than being prevalent in the 90s.

I get what you mean, but fact is that the game will never be "finished" in two regards. The first, as apparent by the amount of lights, glows, and lens flares she has thrown into the game, she doesn't know when to just stop. If it wasn't for the fact that she has her supporters breathing down her neck about why this game hasn't been released yet, chances are she would still be dinking around on it, maybe an hour or two a day in between vidya and recreating horse abortions out of Blue Apron food.

The second, is that the version that will eventually be released will be at best be a very shiny broken machine. It will be like a car you see on a used car dealership when the paint is bright and crisp, but looking under the hood, the oil hasn't been changed since 2008, the battery is dead and the serpentine belt is held together with baling wire and good intentions. Judging from the stream alone she gave, the audio is broken, the animations are incomplete, and apparently you can totally fail at a QTE, but the game just continues to amble along.

Anycase, looking forward to see this drop and the Social Justice crowd to either eat her alive.

Yeah I think it's wishful thinking that Wu is so utterly incompetent that she'd be sitting on a broken game this late, she's not a complete moron she can at least Google answers and ask on Twitter if things are broken she's just really really fucking lazy and the whole thing has been a vanity project from start to finish and she fell out of love with it a few months after the kickstarter seen as she knows it's never going to be a real success or big enough to propel her up to a level where she can just be an idea guy with someone elses money and someone else doing all the work (her VC meetings clearly materialised into fuck all so that's never gonna happen).

The only thing I think she is hoping she gets out of it probably is some R60 SFM videos on pornhub that she can screen capture and get another round of the talk circuit out of.

I'd bet money this is the last game she works on though, there wont be a sequel and I don't think that VR PC will ever be used for anything creative.

In the very unlikely event there is another major delay I can guarantee the reason will be Apples incoming iPhone 7 announcement and her having to wait to test it on that

I think we should all leave really good reviews so she tries to make more games in the future.

"I'm not been having the best of times since playing depression quest but the bright lights and colors of this game cheered me right up. 10/10"

Ah, silly me. The plugin is already in Blender, you just have to enable it.

Ugh. No part of this ugly thing says "porn" to me.

I kind of wish Wu had been a little more... un-Wu-like... during the time period when all of these leaked CON chats were going down.

If she had ever been competent and trusted enough to actually be part of the group instead of just a useful idiot (they thought, until that bit them in the ass), maybe she would have had some ammunition to fire back with now. Wu is a vindictive enough person that she would definitely be spilling anything that would make those people look even worse, since they obviously wrote her off long before she even realized it.

As it is, it appears they were smart enough to keep her relatively insulated from anything that she'd be able to use against them. The only thing she could accomplish by bitching about them now is to make it even more clear that everyone on both sides have always considered her a fuckup
I think you may be right. Wu definitely knows what was said about her considering that she reads her topics and it has to be driving her crazy that she can't publicly blast them for it. Combine that with the pressure of an imminent Kickstarter revolt, she's going out of her way to start fights she believes she can win (or at least heavily moderate).

"I have spent the last 10 years seeking spiritual fulfilment from the brujos and witchdoctors of South America without success. After only 10 minutes of playing Revolution 60, the glaring neon colours caused me to enter a trance where I finally achieved self-actualisation. 10/10 would experience near-death again."

Total radio silence.

There's several parts in the logs where Cross and a few other of Quinn's henchmen hint at or straight up point out that Wu is a tranny, so there's no way in hell that John is going to mention those logs, because he still suffers from the delusion that nobody can tell he's not a True and Honest woman.

Otherwise, Wu would have been using those logs as ammo, because there's no way he would have passed up an opportunity to make his rivals look bad while coming off as the wronged victim.

"My neighbour often stays up late playing Madonna extremely loudly in his flat; as a result, I find it difficult to get to sleep. When I started playing Revolution 60 SE yesterday evening, however, the graphics were so demanding that I caused a citywide blackout as my computer tried to process the background details. Good luck trying to play your music now, Mr. Flynt. Thanks Brianna!"

I don't think it's just that. Wu has already burned so many bridges that she's stuck with the status quo. Even though she's not loved by her SJW allies, she's still nominally on the same "side". They don't really support her, but they don't actively go against her much either. Even Harper mostly just tells her to shut up once in a while. If she went fully apeshit over the way they talked about her in those logs, they'd turn on her fully, and there's no way she could pull an IMC and join the other side. They'd never accept her.

She'd be all alone then. Relegated to an even more inconsequential status with the SJW's and completely ignored except for when they were shouting her down for saying something exceptionally dumb. She's seen it happen to Nora Reed, and there's no way she wants that to happen to her.

Everything mentioned here perfectly describes a really big number of gender studies academics and they have no problem maintaining a foothold in academia with enough backing to push their agenda and silence competent sociologists who would otherwise just laugh at them.

This is true, though I suspect Cross would rather pursue a future in politics or punditry rather than academia. Competition is red hot for miserably paid teaching positions at universities.

Anyway, about her history. I first encountered her writing at the Border House Blog, which was located at borderhouseblog.com. The site is dead now, but lives on through the Wayback Machine.

The Border House is really interesting in retrospect because it was one of the first beachheads where the social justice subculture entered the gaming scene. But it lacked some of the vitriol of the contemporary SJ scene. Reading through the articles there, the authors and commenters seem much more laid-back and agreeable than the berserk denizens of Tumblr -- or, God help us, the Facebook polyamory group.

Here are some of Cross's articles:

Her account of BioWare forum drama after the Jennifer Hepler controversy, involving the infamous moderator Stanley Woo.

Free speech is bad. This article was pretty widely read IIRC. Argument over "die cis scum" in comments.

Feminism in Star Wars games.

Trap jokes in Dragon Age! Oh noes!

https://web.archive.org/web/20140804025557/http://borderhouseblog.com/?p=11060
Review of Remember Me. Argument about the main character being biracial in the comments.

Another interesting Border House personality was Samantha Allen, another trans academic. She was a big deal on the Border House but has never had much of a high profile since. She crowfunded her vagina, but unlike that other tranny a while back, she was honest about it so no one kicked up much of a fuss.

And here's her blog. She went to bat for Hillary on MSNBC last year. Not much else of interest.

The lolcow quotient of these people and the Border House is low; what makes it interesting is seeing how the SJ community developed since then. In the Border House comments, respectful disagreement and debate were common. The "Grand Theft Discourse" article, #2 in the list above, has a shockingly reasonable exchange between Cross and "Deb" about whether it's productive to rant against cis people in trans communities. If this discussion happened in most SJ forums today, it would be more along the lines of "How dare you tone-police me, you cis-apologist piece of shit! I hope you get raped by a pack of goobergators!" I also mentioned the argument over Nilin's depiction in the Remember Me article above; that comment thread is child's play compared to the racial representation arguments you see on Twitter now.

The Border House represented a tipping point in Internet discussions. It was becoming clear that there was a large population online who had lots of time on their hands, intense resentment over perceived wrongs done to them and a thirst for attention. They were a rich, ready fuel source for an outrage-driven media machine, but before they could be used that way some of the moderating voices had to be silenced. Katherine Cross figured out how to ride the Social Justice wave by politicking and running interference for more charismatic figures. Most of her Border House contemporaries were left in the dust.

Also, Cross's main blog is at https://quinnae.com/. It's pretty dry stuff. She does have some interesting writings about Kreia from KoTOR 2.

At this point, it would actually benefit Wu to turn traitor. She's a laughing stock to both the Troon Squad and Chelsea's circlejerk cult, and her Patreon is taking a nose dive. Cheong's life and career went on the upswing after he went full Benedict Arnold, and Wu's life can't get any shittier than it already is. This is his perfect opportunity to switch sides, by using the CON leaks as the impetus for his defection.

"OMG, I had no idea these people were like this! They said all this horrible stuff about me behind my back and used me for their agenda! Once I learned this, I realized I was wrong the whole time! Oh, and don't forget that my amazing game Rev 60 is coming out next week!"
