I hate the idea that make-up is a requirement for females being acceptable in public, but it’s mostly true, and it is especially true in business and professional settings.

Caroline apparently comes from a serious Catholic family and is devout herself. Her mother is a senior economics professor at MIT and I don’t ever see her mother wearing make-up in any photos either.

If you are a serious Catholic make-up can be seen as signifier of a host of sinful and vain attributes of the flesh. If she was as devout/serious as some have claimed I could see her refusing to wear make-up for a host of reasons grounded in her faith or beliefs. You’ll never see a hint of make-up on the faces of nuns.

Her mother seems to askew make-up so I would imagine she discouraged her daughters from wearing it as well. Rather noble and difficult endeavor in modern society to raise daughters who don’t wear make-up. It’s not like Caroline was raised in a religious, small rural community, she was in blue blood liberal Boston.

I had a teacher when I was in Jr High who was part of a Christian sect (7th Day Adventists?). Their adult women stood out because they never cut their hair, were forbidden to wear make-up and couldn’t wear pants. Not wearing make-up is definitely a thing among more devout and religious women.

The Ellison family apparently have three daughters so they might have had some strict and firm dictates about make-up too. It’s just surprising Caroline stayed the course after she left home, so I’d imagine there’s some religious or philosophical grounding to her bare face, not just some contrarian nerdy girl aesthetic.

I’m sure her family wasn’t thrilled with her chasing after a secular Jew from California. She wouldn’t be in this mess if she had stuck to dating upstanding Christian men. More Sir Thomas More, and no more sleeping with the son of Jewish lawyers.

Catholicism might be a part of it, but not wearing makeup is also pretty normal for women in academia, especially in male-dominated fields like econ.

The reason why Caroline's aesthetic comes off as nerd signaling rather than adherence to religious custom is because she's no longer genuinely Catholic in the way her mom raised her. The full archive of her original Tumblr posts is highly annoying and illuminating on this front — she doesn't believe at all in God and just enjoys the rituals and vibes.
This was really interesting because the role of belief in religion is something I’ve thought about a lot. I was pretty Catholic until age 16. I really liked Catholicism but I couldn’t deal with the belief part–I remember hearing a reading in Mass about Thomas doubting that Jesus had risen from the dead, and feeling terrible because I found the whole resurrection thing a bit implausible and obviously that was Wrong.

When I told my mom that I didn’t want to go to Mass anymore because I was an atheist, she responded, “What you believe is your own business! That doesn’t mean it’s okay to stop going to Mass.” I found this very confusing at the time.

I had a mild nü-atheist phase that I got over by 19 or so, and now I daydream about getting married in a church and having my kids baptized and being a ~religious but not spiritual~ Catholic. But like … atheism is still a sin, at Mass you’re still supposed to stand up and profess publicly that you believe Jesus rose from the dead on the third day which feels pretty weird to me. I’m not sure how to be Catholic in an authentic way without believing.

(I’m jealous of people who were raised Jewish–it seems easier for them.)

That's the concise version, but she also longposted about it on 2015-12-12 and straight up called her post-atheist return to Catholicism a "hypercontrarian Social Conservative for the Signaling phase." Her views are evidently less influenced by the Catholicism of her youth than by the modishness of NRx/trad in her adult social circle (LessWrongers). Hence the focus on non-denominational "trad aesthetics" — religion is mostly aesthetic to her, not a faith deeply held with specific tenets.

(It's also notable that she puts more effort into posting about aesthetics than realizing them. Multiple times she writes about cherishing beauty, femininity, domesticity, etc. as personal values. How much of that posting was backed by practice? She strikes me as extremely online with a head in the clouds of theory.)

I agree with your observation that she's a deeply insecure person — off the charts in Big Five neuroticism — but not necessarily with the thought that it has much to do with her looks. She seems okay with her looks and much more worried about her intellect and status. That makes sense to me given her social environment: a lot of guys who aren't lookers themselves but bring high intelligence and confidence to their work. Caroline, a more anxious personality, would naturally worry that her mind doesn't measure up and therefore trust the bad but confident judgment of characters like Sam.
today in personal insights: I realized that part of the reason I got really excited about PUA stuff when I first discovered it is that the Dominant Narrative is that Men Like Smart Women and hearing that makes my brain go “oh no but I’m not smart, clearly no one will ever love me”

and PUA is like “actually men don’t care how smart you are or what you’ve accomplished, all they care about is physical appearance!” to which my brain’s response was “oh good then I’ll be fine, I’m pretty hot”

which uh makes a lot of sense given where I actually am in the distributions of those two traits? idk

My impression is that she'd be extremely neurotic and self-doubting even if born with a prettier face. Sometimes genetics just make you irrationally fucked in the head.

A common misconception. Judaism is primarily an ethno-religion, with some outliers of course.
But being jewish has less to do with religion than with your family tree. The vast majority of jews are atheists. Ever notice how it's oddly the only religion you can genetically test for?
There's no way that skeevy little bitch isn't a crypto.

Pretty sure she's just an unfortunate-looking Catholic woman. Not that anyone's religion or ethnicity is particularly relevant in this situation.

Even if they weren't all homely, shit would still be fucked up.

If they were all popping Adderall like candy, why are they all normal weight or slightly chubby? You'd think they would be skellies.

Are you genuinely not understanding that jews are an ethnic group and not just a religion? You can absolutely be a jew and a Catholic.
I don't really care about proselytizing so called anti-semitism but it's still a hilarious case of bias confirmation.
