GOTY 2023 thread

Honestly, Tears of The Kingdom isn't even a bad game, its just like all of Nintendo's other good-great games in recent years, the vocal minority of soyboys give it a horrible rap, you know which ones I'm referring to.
It was pretty bad. Building stuff was cumbersome, the depths wound up boring, and the world was recycled.

All these indie games in the OP are fucking trash. I don't wanna be a hater but almost all indie games are absolute trash. Hell, even AAA studios produce nothing but garbage lately. These "roguelike" "soulslike" games are all such a pixelated dumpsterfire and don't even get me started on the whole "pixel art" frenzy that's been getting into their heads.
All innovation is dead and imagination is officially gone. The only thing that comes close to worthy for GOTY is BG3, which despite it's flaws is not a bad game at all. Especially compared to every other release so far this year.
And please fucking stop it with the "indie games are so fun bros" because they fucking aren't, 90% are pixel soup every bit as soulless as Starfield. Every small game dev studio think they will come with their new great ideas and in the end there's roguelike soulslike pixel art slop #239048230945 and they're all indistinguishable.

It's a little early to pronounce my favorite game. Does it have to have released in 2023, or just be something I played in 2023? I only play old games I buy on great sales. I think Ace Combat 7 was probably the gold standard of quality - highest highs with consistent quality, intense enjoyment - I played. I think Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey was probably the most interesting game I played.

What on earth are you talking about? 2021 and 2022 were dogshiit years.

I don't believe the whole "gaming is screwed" narrative, outside of the western sphere, in spite of solely sticking to the Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam Deck).
Hence my friendly disagreement with @Pissmaster. And I could have also added Switch ports I've played (such as Nier Automata & EDF 4.1) or games that I have yet to play (Shinigami Shibito Magire, Idol Manager, Cotton Rock n Roll, Nioh 2, Nier Replicant, etc).

I'll be honest though, 2021 still holds my biggest vidya purchase regret, Super Robot Wars 30, next to Serious Sam 4 and RE3make both back in 2020.
Games that do disappoint me are rare thankfully.

The industry side is fucked currently, but the game output over the past few years has been great. Nowhere near as iconic as 1997/98, of course, but few years can match up to those.

With the possible exceptions of Elden Ring and LiveALive there isn't anything on those lists, combined, that wasn't equaled or surpassed by a 2023 game. And thats just Japanese shit, the west has been firing on all cylinders this year.

I'm pretty sure the only 2023 game I've played this year is kirby's return to dreamland deluxe and even I didn't find that remarkable

maybe im just drowning too much in cynicism but gaming is so boring and uninteresting now that even the quality stuff I don't care about, i get more enjoyment out of replaying decade old stuff for the 20th time than I do anything new that comes out
replaying F.E.A.R. with some mods was a blast

Edit: Did Ishin! come out this year or late last year? It's the game i spent the most time on in recent memory but i am firm on the point that it desperately would've needed the Kiwami treatment.
The Ishin we got this year is a kiwami. The original came out like 10 years ago, then Sega saw the fan demand, got even lazier, did a shitty engine transfer, added some le heckin' wacky mechanics, swapped some faces to please the 0/kiwami/7fags, called it a kiwami and localized that instead of just porting the original to pc and translating the console versions.

called it a kiwami
Only in Japan, though, and i get why the japanese RGG fans were mad about that. You already described how lacklustre the "improvements" were. Still happy to be able to play Ishin in human language but i expected more, a lot of the gameplay shows its age very fast.

What's that Kiki Kaikai game from 2022?
Edit: Nevermind, just noticed the red text. Never even knew that came out.

Honestly, given how much good press it got, alongside the fact that the Game Awards don’t hand out the GOTY award to the same series twice, I predict BG3 to take it.

Personally, I go for TOTK, but then again, I haven’t played BG3, as it’s style isn’t really something that appeals to me, though I do understand its acclaim.

FFXVI is definitely my goty. The only game I really wanted to play ever since it was announced.

I can’t deny the horrendous pacing issues, but the high points make up for the low points for me. No game this year has gotten me genuinely hyped up as much as the Eikon fights. That’s extremely rare.

I won't deny that the industry was completely different, and much healthier in general too. Especially west-side once again.
That said however, there is still an impressive number of entertaining vidya present nowadays but it all depends how much someone wants to try out things out of his comfort zone.

With the possible exceptions of Elden Ring and LiveALive there isn't anything on those lists, combined, that wasn't equaled or surpassed by a 2023 game. And thats just Japanese shit, the west has been firing on all cylinders this year.

I'm fairly sure @SSj_Ness was asking for 2023 western games and I was also curious of that claim about them "firing on all cylinders".
Because besides the three titles in the OP, Dave the Diver, System Shock Remake and that Switch port of Red Dead Redemption, I can't think of anything else I wouldn't mind playing. Sole western game this year I've played was 20 Minutes Till Dawn which I found to be a better 'Vampire Survivors' in concept due of the manual aim/shooting (albeit lighter on content).

Posting a list of 2023 vidya randomly from the Internet is not much of a counter-argument anyway.
I could have done the same for this year and the previous ones, but I prefer to stick to games I actually did play (not necessarily on the year they released though)

A lot of this shit is very mid or just terrible. Excluding dlcs and ones I know nothing about
Forespoken is niggerfaggotry, laughably bad niggerfaggotry
Dead space remake is mid bordering on bad
Metroid prime remastered is mid
Hogwarts is mid
Atomic heart is charming but mid
Kerbal 2 seems pozzed
RE4make seems serviceable but unnecessary
MC legends is bad
Advance wars remake seems unnecessary
Dead Island 2 is trash
Honkai starrail is gacha trash
Jedi survivor is mid
Redfall is trash
Darkest dungeon 2 is mid
Gollum is trash
System shock remake is serviceable but unnecessary, considering how good enhanced edition is
SF6 is mid
Diablo 4 is trash
Remnant 2 is mid
Sea of stars is mid and a bit too woke
Starfield is trash
Cities skylines 2 is hilariously bad and quite sad, the Dev's were lazy fucks who overdid every aspect very shortly, the first game is pretty well optimized and works well I'm sure this will be a dumpsterfire

See, even the cringe is good cringe.

Forspoken - woke garbage and a bomb

Dead Space Remake - woke garbage

Metroid Prime Remastered - the one good remaster

Hogwarts Legacy - devs are woke, woke content in the game and only notable because troons started throwing a tantrum

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy - not western and half the game is DLC.

PSVR with Horizon CotM - Horizon is boring and PSVR2 is DOA

Hongkai Starrail - not Western, it's Chinese garbage and CCP propaganda

Redfall - a disaster at launch and not received well

Gollum - a total bomb

Diablo 4 - not received well and pretty much dead in the water now

Final Fantasy 16 - not western, woke trash and a generic DMC clone

Payday 3 - an absolute disaster at launch

AC: Mirage - boring and not received well

Alan Wake 2 - woke shit and so lame it didn't even get a physical release

The rest of your list either isn't Western or is so lame I don't know/care about it.
