I don't really think there was any real way to win in Afghanistan. The people there have been set in their ways for thousands of years. They will never change, nor do they want to. My friends who were part of the GWOT told me that most of the guys they deployed with felt like all their work would be for nothing. There were a few who genuinely believed in the mission, but you'd see their conviction slowly dissipate over the course of the deployment.

Still though I can't imagine just how painful watching the pullout was for them.
