I want to touch on Phil's Gifted Memberships Rant from this morning. If you don't want to read this incredibly autistic blogpost, I'll timestamp the rant below, as soon as Phil uploads it to his channel.
Phil eases his way into this segment, by saying that he got a "request" to talk about this. Keep this in mind. If Phil is telling the truth, and he didn't just fabricate this vague "request" as an excuse to beg and chastise his audience, then we are supposed to believe that someone contacted Phil behind the scenes, urging him to tell his audience that they need to stop being greedy, and pay for their memberships themselves. Again, if this actually happened, then it's hard to imagine this coming from anyone other the person, or one of the people, that are whaling out by gifting all of these memberships. But.. I'm getting ahead of myself.
Phil says that there has been a significant dip in the number of members on the channel. He says, typically, the member count is higher because "we get some generous people who come to the channel and gift memberships." In the same breathe, Phil feels the need to assert that these benefactors are all different people. Phil says "It's not always the same person every month, even though there are some people who come back from month to month and will gift memberships"
The above statement is an admission that Phil is aware of the fact that, every month, there is a different, brand new account that is whaling memberships on the channel. Phil is saying that some of the accounts that gift memberships are recurring donors, but some are not. Think about that for a minute - Phil has a few people, regular donors, who pop up every now and then to gift members. Perfect example: NDO 103. But then there are other accounts who are not recurring, they are not regulars, and every month a new account replaces the one from the month prior. Phil is completely aware of this, and he knows, somehow, that these are all different people.
On the same train of thought, these being different people and all, Phil says that there are 10 - 20 people who come by the channel every now and then to gift memberships. It's unclear whether or not Phil is saying that there are 10 - 20 people in total that whale memberships, or if there are 10 - 20 recurring donors, in addition to the ones that are replaced every month. The latter, obviously being demonstrably false. Either way, again, Phil is adamant: These are all different people, except for the ones who come back sometimes, those people are regulars.
He then says that last year, he had 1,300 - 1,400 members on the channel, due to the benevolence of one person. Phil does not name this person.
This number is incorrect. Phil's highest member count was 1,036 - recorded on Oct, 22 2022. Why was Phil's member count so high? Between Oct 19 - Oct 21, 2022 - TeamIcoGamer dropped more than 500 memberships on the channel. And just for those wondering, DSPReacts did not start until February 2023.
Phil then spends a few minutes explaining how gifted memberships work, before launching into a rant, complete with a high-pitched whiny voice, about how his regular viewers do not pay for memberships themselves, because they know that some whale will come along and gift a bunch. Phil blames the dwindling member count, on these people.
He takes a brief break from shitting on his regular viewers, to assure us, that his views have not dwindled, and his metrics for the month of October were great, even though he spent the entire month yelling at his chat for not talking enough, and he hasn't even been able to maintain 300 viewers per stream for the last couple weeks.
Phil returns to shitting on his regular viewers by saying that they are demonstrating a poor mindset by sitting and waiting for gifted memberships. Phil is trying to paint this as his audience growing lazy, due to the constant gifting, while he's obviously ignoring the elephant in the room - that these people, whether they be trolls or very real retards, have no interest in giving Phil money, and he really only has a handful of significant supporters. He just told us that his member count was only elevated above what it is now, because there is, supposedly, a small group of people who have an interest in gifting memberships to the channel.
He then tries to guilt trip his audience into feeling that they need to step up and gift memberships, because, in addition to this being Phil's lifelong passion, and his business, all of this content is free.
Of course, Phil can't help himself, and it's at this point where he begins to unravel, and he reveals that the real problem with sitting around and waiting to be gifted a membership, is that:
"You might just sit around for months!! What if these people aren't available? What if they don't just want to contribute right now? And that's what's happened. We went from a point where, every month we had 5-6-7-800 members, and now we're down to 400, barely maintaining 400, and everyone's just sitting *crosses arms* Oh I know someone is going to come along and gift- No you don't! No! You actually don't! And if you're here every day, and you're enjoying the content, please support it!"
This is about as blatant as you can get. Phil straight up said "What if they don't want to contribute right now? And that's what happened." He is either, out of communication with this whale, or they have told him that they do not want to gift memberships - whatever the cause, he is completely fucking panicking, and the result is a psychotic prestream where he tries to convince his chat full of trolls that they need to gift memberships. Remember, this entire rant was supposedly prompted by some vague behind the scenes "request" from.. someone.
Anyway, he wraps this segment up by saying that these people in chat who aren't paying for memberships, should be, because it's the holiday season, and they should be giving, instead of demanding to be given to, which is followed by Phil's hope that these benefactors will return for the holiday season to gift more memberships. Isn't it ironic?
All of this - All of the absolute panic, and word salad, and mental gymnastics, just to avoid the reality that Phil is supported, by in large, by one person.
